View Full Version : Third row seats removed… what’s this?

Hi all,
I’ve removed the third row seats as I never use them and I want the drawers and extra storage space. There’s a bit of metal underneath the plastic casing, which doesn’t look like it’s attached by bolts. Pics attached. I have no intention of putting the third row seats back.
I’m wondering if it’ll be an issue if I grind it off?

If you take out the spare tyre there’s probably bolts underneath to undo it

If your going to build a false floor then the metal under that centre trim could be useful for bolting a centre support to. As far as I can see it serves no other purpose other than to hold the trim piece

I'm not sure about NSW, but some states will require a mod plate to remove the third row permanently.

Yes, but you would always say it’s temporary if you’re ever pulled up - no way to prove otherwise and also I would highly doubt any authority would give a **** - there’s always a Yota or Pootrol around with 37’s on it begging to be pulled over.

I was once told that removing the seats can be viewed as temporary - until you remove the seat belts.

Could this be the mounting support for the spare tyre winch????

The height of this matches well with the side of the D4. When I got my Drifta drawers installed, Drifta used this knobby bit" to support the centre of the drawers at the front. They built (or added) another centre support more towards the back of the draw system that sits on the large metal plate section. I'd leave it there, otherwise any drawer system you make or buy would be unsupported in the centre.

The point of my post was that it would be wise to not destroy the mountings or get rid of the seats. If you sell the vehicle, you will probably need to reinstall them to get a road worthy certificate. I found this out from experience with a Pajero that I had done the same thing to.
Cheers

Yep, exactly what is happening to mine in the next fortnight and it will be used.

In VIC your 7 seater can go to a 2 seater without a certificate.
Just a moment... (https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/modify-or-build-a-vehicle/modify-or-build-a-light-vehicle-or-trailer/removing-adding-and-replacing-seats)
Our D2 is now a 2 seater but I've kept the seats if we ever sell.
D4 will tour as a 2 seater as others here are building.

I believe it is the bit that the third row seats rest on when they are in the 'down' position. In my D3 it is a slightly different shape.

in the 5 seater it supports the false floor but if you regularly load it up with too much weight the plastic covering collapses onto the metal underneath.
I remove the plastic covering (theres two push clips on the front side and it slides right off) then bolted a stronger false floor onto the metal frame underneath.

Ahh, but if in an accident the rego states 7 seats and if checked insurance will be invalid.

Not correct, insurance can only deny claim if removal was direct contributor to accident.

However, when completing an insurance policy document, it asks if the car has had any modifications. Failure to disclose mods CAN render the policy void. They always have "out" clauses!!! Interesting to see how one would go
