Hello there. My problem is I've broken off two of the three studs that hold the spare on. Can I drill out those two and if so how do I replace them or do I really need to replace the whole thing. I was shocked at how easy I broke them. I'm having some bad luck with the old girl at the moment. Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks.

I broke theses studs off some time ago I brought long bolts 14mmx 1.5 I think welded a large washer to the bolt head and then to the wheel carrier this works quite well I used high tensile bolts the original set up is very weak.

How the hell did you break them?
No way in a Million years would I have thought this even remotely possible.

….. just one extra “ugger dugger” that’ll do it!

I reckon it'll depend on what previous owners, and or their service folks do.
I've had two spare carriers snap/crack/fatigue on the tin around the studs too.
Both welded up, and now one spare ready to go again.

My son had one of his rear mounted spares fall off last week while towing the camper trailer that I built. The spare went under the trailer and flipped it 360 deg broke the Treg coupling, both safety chains and one shock absorber mount ................. and landed back on its wheels. Trailer itself suffered very little damage - says a lot for building the trailer using Land Rover hubs, wheels, springs and shocks and a special axle machined to take the Landy bearings/hubs.
Just a warning to ensure that your rear mounted spare/s (etc.) are securely mounted, especially if towing anything, and check them regularly.

The rear door carrier is designed for alloys with standard tyres so I went to a fabricator who makes those “swing away” wheel carriers for various makes of 4x4s and he modified my standard carrier to handle the taller and much heavier Defender steel rims and rubber that I run.
