Hi everyone,

I need to help to diagnose a noise that started today.

The noise is only while I turn the car over, it's definitely taking longer to start maybe 5/10sec.
Its a knocking noise sounds like from the trans tunnel.

Once it starts its normal nothing new inside the cabin as far as I can hear.

Hoping someone has advise/experience with this.

Any ideas?

Thanks

V8 or TD5?

TD5 starts instantly, no idea about the noise

Are the starter motor bolts loose?

Manual or auto?

It's a auto, mate.
Thanks I'll have to check that first thing in the morning

It's a td5, yea normally starts instantly. But jumped in the old girl this morning to head to work and had this nasty surprise

could just be an exhaust hanger that's gone south, the downpipe is pretty close to the block.
Get under the car and give the exhaust system a wriggle. You'll soon know either way.

the lack of instant start is a concern though.

Coolant at normal level? No sign of hesitation to turn over?
Why I ask - mine got a head gasket leak that would (I believe) weep into a cylinder at rest, then the extra compression would stop the starter turning the engine over easily. Other symptom was the cooling system slowly pressuring then blowing out coolant from the overflow on a trip…

Maybe also check the injector wiring loom plug front right of head for oil… and where it connects to the ECU.
Can be fouled and then causes misses and poor fuelling etc

Hmm lastly- oil light going out fast/pressure good?

Does your D2 have an auto transmission ?

could be air in the fuel.
I remember when bros' TD5 did this too just before we changed the injector seals.

Can we assume that the OP does a normal start up, in that jump in, turn key straight to start .. as opposed to key in, ign on for a few secs and then start(pre heat)?
TD5 don't usually need pre heat. But a few sec of ign first can prime the fuel system up properly as the pump pressurises the system up, then instant start.

If you're losing fuel pressure overnight .. just enough to have the slight delay in start time, it can also make a knocking noise which disappears as soon as engine starts.

If considering replacing injector seals, re-torque the injector retaining bolts first in case the bolts aren't tight enough allowing the copper washers to not seal adequately.

Woke up and jump straight under the old girl. Turns out there is only one bolt left holding on the starter motor. Looks like at least of had snapped.

That being said, does anyone know the bolt dimensions for the td5 starter motor?

Bolt M10x30mm, stud M10x25mm according to Microcat 2012

Awesome, thanks for that. Looks like I'm heading to the parts store to get them.
