Hi All,
Where is the best place to get a repair/drier kit for the AMK compressor on a disco 4, or is it easier to get one of the aftermarket replacement compressors from ebay?
Thanks in advance
LuckyLes

Well, I have ordered it from 4x4 Airseals so now we will see how long it takes to get here.
I'll keep you posted on the process.
Thanks

I bought a kit from ebay some years ago. I haven't used it yet.

I made my own 'kit'.
List of o-rings needed attached - only a few $$ for the rings themselves.
Silica gel beads from any online seller ~ $24 for a lifetime supply
Filter pads were in good condition so I re-used. Will make some from fabric vacuum cleaner bags if needed.

Thanks for that, I have saved a copy in case the kit doesn't turn up.

What about the piston ring?

What about the piston ring?

I didn't think you could replace that on an AMK.

I’ll have to check my kit if I can find it. I’ve had it about 5-6 years.

AMK compressor only the o rings and desiccant are easily done. I also replaced the exhaust valve solenoid which you can get genuine from LR. Don’t know if mine was faulty but it’s only $60 part and my errors were exhaust valve related. Likely the good clean up did the job.

Mine might be a Wabco or Hitachi

Received the tracking number this morning so it is on it's way.
Good start.

I got the same kit from 4x4 air seals. The previous owner was told the compressor was on its way out ( compressor is about 9 years old now), so for i trial and error i did the kit and the compressor still works well, it fills the tank in less than 2 minutes from being drained. Will see how much longer the compressor goes for.

I have owned my D3 for 7 years next month. When we bought it it had an AMK but I do not know its age. Prior to a recent trip along the Tanami I had it serviced. The mechanic noted that the dessicant was still looking like dessicant should with no powder evident, but had no way of telling how long before it caused issues. The compressor itself has not given any issues since I have owned it. Long may they both continue!

Well, the parcel arrived today, so now to find the time to pull out the compressor and see if I can bugger it up.

Looking at doing a rebuild as part of preventative maintenance. Is this kit the most comprehensive you can get? I noticed there is one with an electrical connector as well. Is it worth it?
Thanks.

I think Tombie might be the man to answer that as he did his reasonably recently. I had mine attended to by Darwin Land Rover so have no knowledge to answer your question unfortunately.

Hi All,
I pulled the compressor out this afternoon, that was easy. Took it off the mounting bracket and slotted the top hole for easier installation. Dismantled the drier and repacked with the new dessicant, removed the exhaust valve and solenoid and cleaned everything up. put the new o'rings in and lubed them with silicone grease, reassembled it all and I will fit it in the morning.
I'll update tomorrow after I know the results.
Cheers

Hi All,
Well, what a great learning experience. I refitted the compressor, double checked all of the connections, started the car, and it runs, but still showing a suspension fault.
Checked everything but could not find any thing wrong, so I decided to take my wife for a drive, off we head to Toowoomba about 45 k's from home. Still showing orange triangle and suspension fault. Parked the car and did what we needed to do, + bought a new centre control valve, started the car and got about fifty metres down the road and the front dropped to the bump stops. Now have red and orange lights and new warning "normal height only available do not exceed 50kph."
I can tell you, the New England highway out to Crows Nest is pretty bloody rough, and a Disco 4 HSE which normally floats over the bumps is like a dray when there is no suspension.
Pulled out the compressor once again, double checked everything, refit, no change.
After a lot of hair pulling, I made the decision to buy a new compressor.
Picked it up yesterday morning and fitted it. Started the car, all good. I now have suspension again.
I will completely dismantle the old compressor to see if I can find out what the problem was, but I have my suspicions about the solenoid, I did pull it off and test it on the bench and it seemed to be working, but the resistance across the coil seemed a little off to me. we shall see when I strip the comp.
I can now remove the air compressor in about 10 minutes, and refit it in about 20 minutes.
The local indie told me that he no longer repairs AMK's, as the success rate is way too low.
Next job, rear drivers side door lock actuator. Woopee, really looking forward to that!
Cheers
Les

I decided to change the desiccant, O-rings and exhaust valve solenoid on my compressor today. It's done 180,000km but the desiccant showed little sign of degradation, one of the filters may as well be new and the other a little dirty but definitely not blocked. I'd be surprised if I couldn't have gotten another 100,000km out of it. but I went this far so changed it all anyway.

That desiccant looks more like molecular sieve than the conventional silica based stuff. Interesting.

the desiccant I replaced it with (from 4x4AirSeals) looks essentially the same only larger beads - they say to be less obstructive but presumably less surface area means less effective.

Hi Macadamia,
The compressor and mount assembly is much easier to refit if you slot the top mounting hole in the bracket horizontally and start the bolt before fitting. The bolt will then support the whole assembly while you get the 2 bottom bolts in.

I’ve read that a few times but I had no trouble getting it back in. It was easy to fit the bottom two bolts then fiddle the top one into place and tighten with a ratchet spanner.

Depends a lot on dexterity I suppose. I read about it in another post so did it, found it made the job quite easy.

For the AMK compressor the bracket doesn't need to be removed from the chassis.
Simply undo the 4 compressor mount bolts collecting the springs and washers then slide the compressor rearwards and angle it out.
Remove the hose and electrical connections first, of course.

Could I ask a part number on the valve solenoid?

The suspension error I'm getting is about not venting quickly enough - the compressor itself is definitely pumping up very well, my mechanic is pretty sure the problem is the exhaust valve (or solenoid - is there a difference?).

My GAP IID is telling me it's a Hitachi compressor, but I gather that doesn't necessarily mean that's what is actually on the car?

Are the black plastic parts of the compressor different on AMK and Hitachi (and Dunlop etc) or is it just the motor/compressor itself?

What's the chances there's a good person on the forum with a changed out valve body they're willing to part with? (he says on knees with hands clasped)?

Thanks in advance...

Take the compressor cover off and you'll see which type you have.
I got similar codes and consensus was the valve gets gummed up with dessicant dust.
A clean out may fix.

I don't have the part number for the AMK type but just ring your local LR dealer and they'll look up for your car.
Genuine part was about $60.

Pretty standard dessicant. It gets hammered by thr compressor, the beads ultimately crack and fail and turn to dust, this dust then is what passes through the filters (what's left of them) and clogs up the valve blocks at each corner.

Renseal in Dandenong but likely any o ring supplier.
I took all the o-rings in and got them matched it was cheaper by far and quicker than the online vendors.

I think I have some left over and no longer have the car. Let me know if you're interested.
