View Full Version : What constitutes an unacceptable post.

Yabbie
27th July 2006, 06:27 PM
Some of those lucky/ unlucky enough to have read it in time may have seen the post's in the thread Titled "Female 'puter"

My question is:

What constitutes an unacceptable post that needs to be removed?????

Is it fair/right to delete a post with a dual meaning, just because a moderator deems it non PG rated.

I.e. Give it a kiss or Rub it etc.

The post I made had not reference to what had to be kissed nor what had to be rubbed, and was written in a way that adults would have seen the secound meaning but those amougst us who a Of PG age wouldn't have seen anything wrong. As I was refering to another members 'puter, to threaten a ride on the ban bus is just alittle over the top even for the censorship dept. at the office of film and literature.

I could understand this if I had made reference to non acceptable terms for genitals or posted pic's of them but to take this action over what was a somewhat clean poke at anothers post is ludicrous. If this is how this site is to be moderated then please out line what I can poke fun at so as not to upset the senitive individuals that oversee what I write.

As a rank beginner, Yabbie, I haven't a clue what the answer to your question is. But the posts that got through (including the first one) would require a lot more parental guidance than I would be expecting if the aim is "PG". I for one couldn't blame you for thinking the thread was going to have a slightly more adult flavour given the first post, but I don't think it's "thin skinned" to edit a post based on sexual or other content. For example, if there was information put on the site about how to use your Perentie to commit acts of terror I'd expect that taken down pretty quickly (and Hi there, ASIO spy bot!). If the aim is PG rated, then I'd expect conversation I'd be happy with a ten year old reading.

I have not been following the thread.

The moderators have to work out what constitutes acceptable...and they do.

What might be acceptable amongst the "inner circle" might be offensive to newbies or guests hence the "G" classification and hence the "Mud Pit" for those who wish to wallow.

Maybe you are pushing the envelope...one man's acceptable is another person's offensive.

That doesn't mean you should stop posting just be prepared for some gentle prodding.

After all the moderators can't read the post before the poster presses the "Submit Reply" button. This isn't censorship just classification.

Heya Yabbie, i didn't see the post that was deleted but i'm sure the moderator in question felt they were doing the right thing at the time.

It is going to take a little while for the new moderators to get a sense of what is and is not acceptable as there are many blurred lines in a place like this.

Just as a rule of thumb i'd say keep it the sort of things you'd say around kids (which i personally don't see innuendoes being a problem) and give the new mods a bit of breathing space ;) and of course anything you know is crude into the Mud pit.

All will return back to normal in no time :D

How about a little more time with the training wheels on dad before letting him loose on the forum.
I mean fair go first he cans the Jokes thread, next out goes the innuendoes, whats next ??? I gotta take my shoes of before I log in!!!

I mean sure have moderators to weed out the twisted sick individuals that say norti stuff in front of kiddies but come on surely the atmosphere in here doesn't need to resemble that of a church picnic day.

If this section of the site is to slide in to the slippery slope of politcally correctness then I would at a guess expect a lot more new comers to the adult section leaving a corner stone part of this site with barely anything else but members asking other members how the weather is.

If I have upset any moderators by posting my dislike to their actions then be that at as it may, the position of moderator isn't a god like role. I understand the dilemma’s of taking on the role and being keen.

I liken the experience to teaching a kid to fish for the first time, you don't need to rip the things head off at the first nibble. Nor do you have to trawl the waters removing every fish in them. "Just take what you need to son and leave the rest alone. Otherwise there will be nothing left for you next time!!"

Remember the young bull and the old bull up on top of the hill?
Young bull says "Hey!! lets run down there and :censored: some of those cows"
Old Bull says " Nope lets walk down and :censored: the lot"

In other words Phoenix take a little time to assess the thread before you chop the heart out of the forum, if you chop into every thread there will be no threads, which will change what has made this place so popular.

Why does this site particularly need a PG rating? I don't know many people under 18 who own a Landrover - so why would minors frequent a forum on them? Are people worried that someone may be looking over their shoulder whilst they are online (my dog only reads at a first-grade level anyway).

In any case there is a very simple rule I follow when posting (or simply talking to someone) and that is - I will not intentionally offend anyone! Therefore regardless of what language or toilet humour anybody posts, if we all agree that no-one here is setting out to "intentionally" offend anyone else, then surely we can let anything that might offend us slide.

I've seen some pretty grubby forums in my time and this is as far from any of them as you can get. The level of respect and general maturity amongst members here is impressive so I, for one, can certainly tolerate a little adult or latent schoolboy humour. Besides, threads tend to sink down the list quite quickly so there is little need for anything risque to be removed. If it doesn't blow up anybody's skirt it's gone automatically. Except for that damn "I can see stars" thread... speaking of which, it must be time to dig that baby up again.

Perhaps some facts.

I ddi not delete any thread, but modified a one phrase each in 2 posts. The part that was deleted from your post yabbie was done so for 2 reasons. 1, I thought it was borderline, and 2, because a member of the forum found it questionable enough to click on the "report this post to a moderator" button (the exclamation mark roadsign) which sent me an e-mail with his concerns.

A phrase was also deleted from roscos post, which in hindsight was probably a little overzealous. Personally I like the idea that anybody could safely wander around this forum and not be offended or concerned about anything. For the record we do have a couple of users who are under 18 that I know of, although they don't post much.

As for the insinuation that i'm too much of a beginner ....

well I play hockey socially, and as part of that roster (bottom 2 divisions), each team has to provide 2 umpires for one of the other games. I don't like doing it, and i'm no good at it, but I do my bit. For those that question my calls, if they think they can do better, here is the whistle, go for it.

I volunteer the time that I spend moderating, I don't get paid, I don't have to do it. why do I do it, because I think this forum is fantastic, and I wanted to help incisor run the place. Yes, i'm new to being a moderator, but i'm not new to forums at all, having been part of this one for some time (go on, look at the date of my first post). It's hardly like I don't know my way around a computer either, having completed my Bachelor of Computing. So sit back, enjoy these forums and relax. I'm not picking on you, crump, dobbo or anybody. Ok, so I did change Ace's title, but that was a fredulin slip , but I fixed it. I'm just trying to help this place tick over in a regular fashon.

I'm not stressed about this, or taking it personally, although some of what you've said does feel like an attack on me, even though all i'm attempting to do is find an equilibrium in my moderating, and be fair and even handed.

Feel free to keep discussing it here, it might help others understand what we expect, but if things get over PG rating, expect at the least a PM about it ;)

Yabbie
28th July 2006, 06:22 PM
If I wanted to make this a personal attack on you PHOENIX it would have been. Being from Tassie gives me plenty of ammo:p

No one cares about your qualifications or sporting efforts, we do however care about this site changing from what has made it so popular to begin with.

This site has become what is is today because of the simple fact that it is "just" what it is a "Forum". A place to discuss, have a few laughs and get other info on all things related to our interest in Land Rovers.
As the tittle says:
Almost anything goes, have a look and drop in a few lines. Think of it as a campfire chat

Swearing is automatically removed unless of course your intentionally trying to post it, which nearly always slips through the cracks. The idea of not upsetting "anyone" is border line ludicris, I mean anyone if they look hard enough will no doubt find something that they find offensive. I.E. let's say Cruiser takes offence to the ridicule he receives from others about owning and driving a toyota. Does this now mean we can't post derogatory comments about other type's of vehicles?

Some may see this as me getting worked up about a storm in a tea cup but when will it stop? If you start editting posts so as not to offend anyone, the attraction to this site will end for many of those members who help make it what it is today.

The system of anonymously reporting threads that offend you is flawed. How do we know it's a ligitament report and just because 1 person is offended doesn't mean the rest of the 1533 members have been offended as well.

The internet has far worse material then a few adult innuendoes and if kids today a half as bad as the kids before the internet where then I am sure someones dad has a subscription that his kid knows the password for. And for those that are that easily offended that they feel the need to complain try just clicking the little x in the top right hand corner, go on just try it, It'll make all the norti words go away.

Hey quiet frankly i couldn't give a "RODENT'S BOTTOM" (WAS GOING TO SAY RAT'S **** BUT YOU KNOW HOW IT IS THESE DAY'S)
