Hi all,
I recently started going for offroad.
Many of my mates have disco s.
I am also keen to join the gang.

I am looking for a td5.

Very difficult to find a vehicle here in townsville.
What are my best options to get hold of a decent vehicle.

Thanks

People with TD5 Discos tend to hold on to them but car sales has some when I last looked other then that good luck.

I got mine from a wrecker. She hadn't moved in years.

A lot of people get sick of them and offload them because of little problems. Mine just needed a new clutch. (plus a million small things)

Be prepared though, sometimes there's big problems.

And be prepared to travel for the right one. I live in Tasmania and most of our vehicles are from elsewhere in Australia either requiring me to fly over, inspect and drive home, or buy unseen and have delivered.

You need to be good with the tools if you want to buy cheap. A family member in Cairns with a TD5 has now done 450000 - continuous work required of course as preventative maintenance. If you buy one that has been neglected and with no mechanical skills then be ready for big bills and problems.

I purchased a D2 specifically because of their poor reputation and I wanted something to tinker with. I have to be honest and say that I've been disappointed by its surprisingly good reliability! It did need a bit of work at first mainly to sort out PO induced stuff. I've still got some non urgent repairs to do, but all in all it's been going great.

Having said that, I'd always recommend paying extra for the best condition vehicle you can find. I reckon odds are that a vehicle that looks will kept and maintained is usually just that, but even so it doesn't hurt to have it checked over for problems pre-purchase.

And D2 common problems would include brittle plastics, oil leaks, worn bushes and ball joints, rust, water leaks, three amigos and electrical issues (with the most infuriating including dodgy PO wiring jobs which seem to be far too common!).
