As the title says, mine has died. I was at KLR at the time so Brad at KLR did a fair bit of fault finding and determined it was the starter. In the end, he did the old trick of tapping it with a hammer while I operated the key. It started so I was able to drive home. It started again (while hot) when I got home but not the next day. Naturally, the suspension lowered over night (it doesn’t normally :( ) so I can’t get under it again to tap the starter while my wife cranks it.

I’ll jack it up tomorrow and see if I can get to the starter to give it a tap.

Dunno what it’s gunna cost to replace yet. Karcraft’s list (RRP) price for a genuine LR starter is over $1300. If I had more time I’d consider buying from OS.

Replacing it requires removing the RH exhaust manifold and dropping the exhaust to get access so it will need a hoist. I’ll take it back to KLR during the week to get it replaced.

Is it the solenoid only; or the whole unit ?
You should be able to pick up another unit for around $400 if you shop around. Also cross check part number with BMW part numbers and there is an even bigger choice !

Land Rover Starter Motor - Bosch NAD000030 | FCP Euro (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/land-rover-starter-motor-range-rover-sr9504x)

Have replaced it myself recently with this unit from FCP.

Pretty easy, a bit tricky to get out but you can angle it out after removing some heat shields. I think i found the article on it on a forum with instructions.

you certainly dont need to follow the whole drop the exhaust bizzo.

PS, i actually just did an order today from FCP, should be here in 6 days, if you can wait that long!

EDIT: i think this is the article:

Yes, mine was done last night by the apprentice at KLR Automotive. As you say, he didn’t need to drop the exhaust or unbolt the RH exhaust manifold as specified in the workshop manual.

I couldn’t have done it at home, I couldn’t have gotten under the car without a hoist.

The output bearing is stuffed and the output seal was missing. I haven’t pulled the old one apart yet.
