View Full Version : Steering wheel shudder???

Howdy All

An issue that I'm struggling to resolve at the moment is our D4 having steering wheel shudder (front to back, not shimmy as in wheel vibration) whilst going over bumps (most noticeable when driving across the sand last weekend). I am due to change out the LCA's but I'm not entirely convinced that this is the reason. Definitely not the brakes either as I have just recently replaced the front discs and pads all around and the issue was there before and after the brakes work. Maybe related or not is the steering wheel also has quite a bit of play (not sure that it's gotten worse, just something that I've noticed more lately). Has anybody experienced something similar in terms of the steering wheel shudder?

Mine was rear brakes, and it was real bad. Or maybe it was rear lcas. I can't remember now. I really shouldn't drink so much. My particular D4 lives on a diet of front sway bar bushes too. Loves em

How many ks? I'd be checking the upper control arms and rears. Best bet if doing front lowers, do uppers as well, then do rear upper and lowers too. Should sort it out for the next 100,000km.

Check steering arms too with car jacked up wheels off thr ground. Any play in the steering rodes means their ball joints are worm. Not heard of many D4s that have had this issue (mines on 226000km and original steering tie rods) .

Yeah, I was quite surprised that at 320k km that the steering rods are still all good.

While you get the upper and lower control arms done, also do the sway bar bushes. The front end is off anyway, May as well so them too.
