View Full Version : Removing Front Drive Shaft - Diff Oil

I have to replace the lower control arms on my RRS and when I do the passenger side I am going to pull the driveshaft as the inner CV boot has been split for a long time and is an opportunity to replace the boot - to keep the dirt and water out I have had it wrapped up in glad wrap so the CV itself will still be OK (a trick learnt long ago when owning a 4wd Subaru).

So my simple question is - given the front of the car will be up on jack stands, how much diff oil, if any, will I loose when I pull the drive shaft out of the diff?

Almost none seems to be lost.

I'd reckon about 50%, drive shaft would be splash lubricated from the diff. Simple check would be to see the level where the fill point is in relation to the bottom of the drive shaft if fill point is higher, you will lose the amount that is the height difference between the two points.

you may loose a little, but it wont be a significant amount
