View Full Version : Plastic strip on drivers door.

The plastic strip/moulding on the outside of the drivers door has lifted away from the door for about 50mm. I am not sure of how it is attached and I want to straighten it reattach it to the door. Does anyone know how it is fixed to the door skin? I am thinking of heating it a bit with a heat gun and sticking it back with sikiflex, I could even lightly clamp it with the door open till the sikiflex cures.
Just wondering if anyone has clues or has done it.
Lindsay.

Probably automotive double-sided tape

Photo would be really helpful. I’m guessing you’re referring to an aftermarket bump strip which would be held on with slimline double sided tape.

Must be like these. Correct, double sided 3M tape. There will be dirt and grit behind it if it has lifted for a while. Best bet would be to remove the whole thing, clean it up properly and re stick dst along the full length

Thanks for that I was not aware that it was not standard fitment. The strip has been glued with a cream coloured something and the glue has not been applied to the full length of the strip allowing the end to lift allowing dirt and moisture in.. I will pull the whole strip off and restick it.
Thanks for the replies.

No worries, note these strip's were on the car when I bought it 8 years ago, and I'm the second owner. AFAIK these are / were an option, the definitely look factory and have not lifted a nanometre off the door skin in all the miles I’ve subjected this thing to.

It was a factory option, but there were/are also aftermarket sellers, so it may have been more or less competently 'DIY' stuck down... Factory fit was pretty common in the UK, and I didn't see many failures there (a decade or so ago...). I thought about them to protect the paintwork in carparks, but they're too low and miss all the wider parts of doors. that tend to be a bit higher up, so after some testing with other cars, I didn't bother... Can only help against general knocks if they're there though...

It was fitted by the dealer as an option before delivery,so I presume they are the standard LR option.
Good to hear from you,and glad the D4 is going well.[biggrin]

I had them on mine from new. It was a Demo model from Barbagallo and had a few "extras" which were normally "options" already installed.
I did not like the look of these rubber strips and removed them virtually the first week I had the vehicle. There was some marking left from the double sided tape, but that came off easily enough with a bit of heat and a plastic scraper, followed by a good polish.

Thanks Paul, we did just short of 10,000 K's and pulling our camper we got 8.38 litres per 100 k's going up and 7.75 K's per 100 coming home via the inland route. The computer showed between 10.5 and 12.5 per 100. I originally doubted the fuel used and have double checked it with our bank card and redone the sums. The same figures come up so a lot less than the defender at 12.5 L/100 K's.

Just a thought, 8.38 k's per litre is very close to 12 litres per 100 k's.
Might be a high chance the figures are mixed

If you do let me know if they leave a mark after. That's my only concern, because they are low on the door and the colour it is I think it should be ok.

My '08 D3 has those as well and they are attached to the door with plastic clips that sit in holes drilled through the door skin. Mine came adrift and I thought of tossing them until I saw the holes and clips . I ended up buying new clips from Ebay and refitted the strip to the door. This involves stripping the innards from the door since access is needed on both sides of the door skin. Mine is a genuine fitment but I hope yours is an aftermarket stick on accessory which should be easy enough to re-stick rather than the drama of pulling the door apart like mine. Good Luck . . .

I have these, it’s 3M. Don’t pressure blast them! It will potentially start separating.

I had mine fitted during a service, wanted a cleaner look so had them colour coded.
If you’ve had them on a while, even when buffed, there will be some colour variance on the paint once cleaned up.
