View Full Version : Launch gone wrong….

Had to rescue a troopy today……

He was damn lucky I was working on a sea legs behind the boss shed……

8m + tides doesn’t give much time…….when you get bogged launching a sizable boat on the beach.

Cut a long story short, the girls in reception suggest they should wait an hour or two before launching, they said thanks but no thanks

Troopy’s mate had no issues with his boat but was full of attitude when he bailed me up asking for help, especially when I ask about tyre pressure, to which he answers 25psi, I looked at his ute and said there is no way you’re running 25psi ……Oh and than starts taking pics while I’m waiting in the tractor in knee deep water instead of getting yen slings I have him out off his car.

I was the only person working today that’s allowed to operate the tractor [emoji609] they had already snapped a tow strap…water was lapping at the rear doors when I dragged the out. Troopy would have been fully under water.

Oh and they were not impressed when I told them to fill the holes they dug…..holes are no sea leg friendly

Anyways…….a couple pics

Troopy damage

Funny thing is once they sorted the $300 recovery fee they couldn’t start either of the outboards on the troopy boat….

#1 rule, always test start engines before launching

After they motored off I thought I’d check the tyre pressures on the troopy

25psi +/-25psi. :eek2:

Ironically he potentially may have had no problems if they were actually at 25psi.

Oh well, it'll be another $300 when they pull the boat out again.

What are sea legs?

It's normally the way you get used to naturally counter-rocking with the boat if you've been on the boat for a while. When you get off the boat into land it still feels like you're moving with the boat for a while.

It probably was! :lol2:

Admittedly I wondered how he was working on his sea legs!

I originally thought it might have been one of these : Beer - Sea Legs Brewing Co. (https://www.sealegsbrewing.com.au/beer/)

But then the holes on the beach didn't make much sense. The boat seemed a better fit.

The bogged troopy and the dual cab both dig holes in the sand…..

Stingray holes cause us enough troubles……

We normally charge for damage to the beach as well……..

The owner arrived today, he approved these guys to launch, he said he is considering upping the recovery cost to $1000

Another recovery from a month ago, 30 footer, this one was in our creek.

High tide launch and retrieve only from creek

Firstly he smoked his winch as he didn’t want to put trailer wheels in the water

Than truck could pull boat and trailer up the ramp

Plus he dug holes with the outboards…..

This was pre-arranged so we were on standby, he was hoping. It to have to pay anything extra. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220828/69a0b73867df714cbaf7a2d299cdf339.jpg

We are a popular launch point as we are the most northern boat ramp on King Sound

Punters pay for a campsite and not actually camp as they launch their for a multi day trip.

We always suggest

- 18psi
- Turn engine off if launch is not quick
- The beach is flat, yep you’re going to have to get your rear wheels wet, or have a drop down third wheel, unhitch and push trailer in until boat floats than connect top and pull trailer out…that’s what the locals do.
- launching and retrieving closer to high tide is always easier

But they generally don’t listen, are always experts, and it never happened to them.

If you’re up this way give us a shout, I might be able to help out [emoji6]

King Sound up near the Dampier Penisula? I'm confused, your location in posts is shown as Brissie. [bigwhistle]

King Sound up near the Dampier Penisula?

I would assume so. I'm thinking this is the same creek, boat ramp, at low water. This was when I was there in '05.

It's a bit SE of the Peninsula proper.

It shows as rotated, but correct when cursor is applied. Weird!

Nope that’s not ours…..

The troopy got bogged on the beach, it’s where 99% launch and no way we could launch a 30’er on the beach.

Creek launch is mainly for us and the odd terrorist….

Yes it would be confusing…..

We’re on the road full time, we’ll when work doesn’t find us.

You’re correct, dampier peninsula

Leeders creek up near Darwin has a great service.
You pull up with your boat jump on board and old mate launches the boat for you and parks/locks up the truck and trailer safe and sound.
You give them a call on the radio on your return and you get your trailer backed into the water and the boat winched up for you.
Back in the 90's this cost $20 [thumbsupbig]

One of my favorite passtimes is sitting at the boat ramp watching the numpties launch and retrive their boats, Verry entertaining[biggrin]

Out of interest , WA rego check has FLAMINGO as a 1991 Toyota but is Unregistred and thus uninsured. What an absolute tosser , should be up for a lot more than $300

should have let it go under before pulling it out.

Interesting…….

Tonnes over ‘locals’ choose not to register the cars, boat trailers and boats. They also don’t purchase fishing licenses.

After they motored off I thought I’d check the tyre pressures on the troopy

So, why the hell don't people drop their tyre pressures?

Every time I watch a video of people getting bogged on Fraser Island it boggles my mind - it's such basic knowledge.

No word of a tilt tray, they somehow freed the clutch up after we retrieved his boat…

Maybe the clutch wasn’t actually seized [emoji6]

Maybe the clutch wasn’t actually seized [emoji6]I had something similar happen a few weeks ago in my 2000 hilix (2wd) . Done a bank launch with the tinny the water was up to the sills to give me enough depth for the boat. Went out fishing for a few hours, came back and the clutch had seized. Lucky it was left in gear and came free after a few cranks of the starter.
Cheers

Soooo yesterday we had another recovery…..I only come along after it was completed.

Not 100% of the rig but it goes something like this….they did have 5 maybe 6 vehicles on the beach

A big RAM
4 jet ski trailer complete with massive storage area and maybe 10+ fuel jerries
Might have been a tri axle
Incoming tide

And yep ended up bogged…….

one of the group comes over for a chat as we were pulling a new 700m 3 phase cable into the ocean and said thank for your guys saving the $250,000 RAM.

I could here one of the other guys saying the a jet skier they we running 55PSI when they got bogged. After we recover them they lowered to 25…….but than decided to use eight guys to carry each of the jet skis from water to trailer.

One of the smaller trailers
