D3 TDV6 Manual gearbox fuel consumption Melbourne to Sydney, your thought?

Hi all
Just got my D3 TDV6 Manual, and finished the trip from Melbourne to Sydney with the fuel calculation was 76L/862kms. So it turned out about 8.82L/100km with full highway speed all time and aircon ON with cold air at fan speed 3.

At the odometer of about 320k on the D3, i thought this figure would be quite good considering my previous D2 TD5 only could do the best was 9.8L/100km on highway with the same condition.

What are your thoughts?

The 600km run home only had 2 "around town site visit" bits and I managed ~8.9, so yours sounds "about right".

I take it you have very little external accessories fitted? I can only dream of fuel economy that good but my D3 is a heavy weight with plenty of economy busting stuff fitted

Yeah, none. I put on what I need when I need it, otherwise it's the simple "block of flats" as delivered.

I bought it because of the "internal silence" so additional road and wind noise are non-starters.

There is only a very small sample pool of manual D3's to compare with in OZ.

I'm sure he doesn't need my sympathy. Anyone who buys something like that must be in a position where the cost of gogo juice is inconsequential.

I actually got just under 10 litres per 100km in my 8 speed D4 diesel SD HSE version. Coming from Sheep Yard Flat a few years ago. Hmm ... maybe 5 years ago. Travelling with the traffic, at 110 to 112 on the speedo. Which was actually about 106 KMH. I did have the wind behind me.

I was very pleased.

But then, I was towing my 2.4 tonne rated caravan behind me. I had let all the water out, so it was probably about 2 tonne at the time.

I've had under 13 travelling at around 88 KMH on empty roads ... with the van behind me. Normal is around 15 these days ... I intend to do another fuel test run to Sheep Yard Flat and back in November ... I now have heavier, wider, truck rated, higher aspect ratio tyres, plus a steel bull bar, spot lights, a radio aerial, roof rack as well ... none of that will help fuel economy. Plus an additional 65,000 km.

Medium loaded,10.8L/100,calculated,dash readout at 10.7.

Same mods as our old D4 2.7,and very similar fuel burn,although one is larger,heavier,and has around 40% more power and torque.

ALthough giving it a flogging,it will use quite a bit more than the old D4,with same sort of driving style.[smilebigeye]

Locally they are running 12-15 at the speed limit.... All with Toyota's own patented copy of LR's "stadium seating" , achieved simply by coming from factory with the wrong front suspension.

At around 120kmh extended travel on bitumen my mate consistently is seeing around 21 per Hundred, in fairness that is with a dual rear wheel carrier and bull bar.

I strongly doubt that many local 200s have 40% more power and torque than ours!

On the weight front, I have never weighed a 200 tbh, but I know our D3 before we put any accessories on was very close to Toyota's quoted specs, but then one owner told me Toyota lie on all their weights... So now I don't know!

We are running at about 3 tonnes all the time.

On bitumen on a decent trip we would be about 10- 10.5L/100.

We have RAI, ARB bull bar, 75% length roof rack with solar panel as wind deflector.

Dual Battery, 75 litre Dual zone Waeco and integrated fridge slide and cargo barrier.

The car will be run in soon, it's just past 502 000km.

If its getting that sort of fuel economy,with only those mods,something is not right.Sure he hasnt got the van on?[biggrin]

Have a look at the published power/torque figures for the two vehicles,stock..[wink11]

in fairness he was running them up north as part of his job, and they were brand new or at least fairly new fleet vehicles fitted out the same , every one was returning the same figures from what I could gather.

The same crew pestered and pestered management for a 70 series as well, they only got 1, everyone drove it, now no one will!

It appears it was just an itch that needed to be scratched once.

With the same driving style in my D2 TD5 03 Manual around Sydney traffic it was 12.5L - 12.75/100km.

Now with exact the same style (closed doors, aircon ON at cold level and fan speed 2 or 3) it is showing 9.1L/100km. Although the D3 is stock standard, I think this is a bit too far from what I was expecting this heavy rig to get but that's on the positive side [bigsmile].

Thanks for the thread, useful observations as another of the few manual D3 owners. Had my amazing March 05 built D3 since late 2009, fuel consumption varies from 9.2 l/100km - 11.6 l/100 (calculated between fills, not trip computer, which is 8.6 - 10.8) depending on short town trips vs highway and headwind, no wind or tailwind and how strong. As well, the Windcheater roof rack makes about a 1.4 l/100 difference. Mostly consumption sits around 9.6 - 10.2.

Best I ever had (once) was 8.2 l/100 with the original 235/70 x 17 skinnies on it and no roof rack, just after I bought it at 159000 km. Its now done 530,000 km and returns the above.
