View Full Version : Another project 110 200tdi

After finishing the D1 300tdi rebuild, we’ve decided to start another restoration. This time a 200tdi 110 I bought about 4 years ago, with a blown motor, 250k km on the clock. The crank case vent was puffing like a steam train, the paint is a bit sunburnt, and the footwells have a little rust. All quite repairable.
We’ve started pulling bits off the motor and getting ready to get it out. Here’s a few pics. Access to the bell housing bolts is a lot easier with the 110.
Any tips would be appreciated. And any comments on LT77 box would be appreciated. Ive never owned a LR with this box.

Does anyone know why there would be oil on the turbo inlet?
Thanks.

Yes, that's where it's coming from.

One or two have suggested I should consider swapping to a 300tdi (and R380 etc). I remember 200tdi owners bagging the 300tdi when it was released. I didnt take much notice as new Land Rover models often get bagged by enthusiasts.
Any experience with both on here?

Any experience with both on here? You should stop wasting your time on that old car, I'll take it off your hands no questions asked!
But seriously... I guess it depends on what you hope to achieve, do you want it to be fairly original?
If not then the 300 TDI r380 combo will be the easiest to get parts for and keep running.. but some are quite particular about keeping things original spec, and I also get that.
I believe some felt that the torque curve in the 200 was better than the 300.
The 200 is a lot harder to work on for a number of jobs.
I think the best feature they had was the exhaust manifold not being part of the turbo, makes it a lot easier to upgrade, or was that just the disco?
Of course no one is gonna ask you to pop the bonnet to look at a 300, but some will to look at the 200, I know I would.

Thanks Shack.
I am probably going to keep it for at least 2 or 3 years, then see if it meets all my needs as a low budget tourer. As in comfort, capability, reliability. It ticks no safety boxes. I dont think I’ll be towing anything with such a small motor.
I’d prefer to keep it all original, for originality’s sake and as mods always have some knock on effect (small or medium hassle).

I slowly turned the crank over on the week end. It’s not seized, so that’s a good start.

So chasing a 200tdi block, preferably with a reasonable crank/rods/pistons. In Brisbane area.

Thats a major bugger. Hopefully you can use the motor parts still if they're required.

Yep, it is. The turbo, starter, AC, alternator, power steer etc all seem good. We haven’t taken the head off yet. If that’s also US, will consider a 300tdi/R380 or maybe a 4BD/LT95 option.

The head is off and looks pretty good, but will get it checked to confirm.
It looks like the blow-by was caused by head gasket failure between the cylinder and push rod. A fairly easy fix in retrospect.

This weekend I finished pulling the original motor down and salvaging was what was left after putting a rod through the side. It looks like the big end cap nuts came loose on number 4 piston.

Sump off. Everything is looking fairly ok inside so far.
Next weekend will get to check out the bearings.
There is no real indicators of why this motor was removed. Maybe it was a head or gasket problem, and the previous owner decided to swap it out for another. Don’t know.

nice work.... and well done finding a decent looking replacement.
I had a 300tdi do the same recently at number two piston. This was caused by coolant leaking internally in the cylinder head, down the exhaust valve and into the combustion chamber at number two piston. Bit disappointing at only 354,000kms. I've owned this car for 14 years and maintained it thoroughly/regularly. Bores in the block are still like new, but the block is toast as is the cylinder head.

A brief update.
The block is stripped. Some wear on the big end and main bearings. The crank has been checked and is in spec, so have ordered standard size bearings. The bores are looking ok as in no lip at the top ( I don’t have a ID micrometer to check), and so the plan at this point is to just hone the bores, replace the rings and reassemble.
A delivery from Turners arrived today.

Does anyone have a recommendation on a head gasket brand? Most places seem to only sell the Elring brand in 2 hole size. Thanks.

For what it's worth, I put an Elring in my 300Tdi 10ish years ago, and just fitted one to my young blokes Disco.
No complaints yet.
I've read that Victor Reinz is the OEM brand

Thanks Tony, I’ve been told about a multi layer metal head gasket. 4WD industries describe the Victor Reinz gasket as a multishim head gasket.
Their webpage photos of the Elring and Victor Reinz gaskets look identical.
Turners only sell the Elring brand. We also used the Elring on a D1 300tdi rebuild. So I’m probably over thinking this.

Another update, replaced the plugs with stainless option supplied by local engine rebuild place, and did final parts order. I’ll repaint the block and clean up accessories while I wait for parts to arrive.

Looks like our 200 tdi. Ours is 1992. I bought it in 1996 as a 110 pickup and it was converted to a 110 9 seat station wagon. Colour is LRC 390.Still on it's origional, engine and gearbox . Springs are origional too but the shocks were replaced about two years ago. When it reached thirty years of age it qualified for vintage roadtax which is €56 or 91.03 aud per year. Insurance is cheap vintage too.

A minor update. I decided to strip the block again and get the deck skimmed. Now almost back to where I was. Also had the bores checked and all ok with standard rings. So probably was a fairly low km block as claimed.
I didn’t think of it till now, but wished I had thought to have the cam bearings replaced while it was at the engine shop.
