View Full Version : replacement TD5 ECU recode?

Just pulled the trigger on a replacement TD5 for the 130 - pretty sure the 550,000km engine in it now has a cracked head.

My question for the experts: whats the process for 'recoding' the ECU for the new engine? I've just ordered a nanocom but haven't used one before (don't bother with an i930 BTW, waste of time for a TD5 no matter what they tell you).

Cheers,

Adam

I am pretty sure there is no "recoding" required.
The ECU does not know the engine number or anything. The engine is dumb.
It should start right up with a new engine.

my understanding is you need to tell the ECU the new injector serial numbers?

ok, but I assume this still needs to be done?

ok, but I assume this still needs to be done?Yep, there are codes printed on top of the injectors, if you use new injectors( I.E. not the originals) you'll need to change these in the ECU.

You will need the TD5 engine unlock code for the nanocom, which I'm assuming you would have bought with it.

yep, got the TD5 code with the nanocom. Is there a tutorial or something I can read/watch about how to do this? Am I overthinking it, is it so obvious no instructions are required?

at some point yes. I would not be stressing over this, you have bigger fish to fry, get it up and running first.

This is what the screen looks like ... you simply adjust the codes for each of the 5 injectors, and then on the next screen there is a button to "Write settings".

From memory there is also another method where you can save the codes to a file, and then edit the codes in a txt editor, and then upload again.

Its easy enough to do ... not something to worry about. You'll work it out once you have the nanocom in hand.

It will run fine without recoding other than you will notice the idle not quite 'clockwork' as they idle very steady when tuned right (ie cam to crank timing and bump stop clearances set nice)

I have tried this a few times when playing around (I have 10 injectors and tested all on motor)

So don't stress if it takes you a few months to get to it, the idle is the only time you will have any driver noticeable effect.

My nano wasn't showing anything out of the ordinary balance wise during actual on road use. Just on idle.

I had trouble getting Nanocom to save the settings until sierrafery came to the rescue and what he said worked on mine.

See this thread.

And as others have said, it will still run fine with wrong codes in ECU
