Anyone running these in their defender?
Been ordered to get ‘quieter’ tyres by the boss rather than the old km2s I have on at the moment (she believes unbearable at hwy speeds).
Was looking at all terrains but would like to keep muddies on, given that these are supposed to be at the quieter end of the mt spectrum (according to the marketing) wondering if the noise from it being a defender would negate the benefits of an all terrains relative quietness and these would be a sufficient compromise?
Anyone have some real world experience?
Apologies if posted in the wrong section

Worth adding sound proof to the rear cargo area, carpet and rubber matts at the footwells. It will make a big difference. m

the maxxis is an 85% offroad tyre (from their website), if you mainly drive on the highway and want to reduce noise, maybe go for an H/T tyre ?

i run them. About 15,000km on them so far. Came from KM3. if its just noise you are concerned about, they are still pretty quiet but i expect them to get louder as they age (as did the KM3s). They are wearing better than the KM3s at the same distance. I found with the KM3s they wore quickly then settled about the 10-15k marker. I got 70,000 kms from the KM3s and only got rid of them because they cracked at the rim to tyre junction (lots of low psi driving). There were no KM3s in the country at the time and was talked into the maxxis.
What i don't like about the maxxis is the wet weather braking and handling. the KM3s i could throw into a corner and never felt to concerned about the tyre. that said i also changed from coils to air bellow suspension so that could influence my comfort mid corner. The other is braking. Whether dry or wet the maxxis will lock up much sooner than the KM3s did. I've not messed with the brakes so its a straight comparison, if anything the brakes have additional wear than with the KM3s. In the dry its manageable. In the wet, your eyes can fog over from the bum hole clamping shut.
closing comment, any tyre will be an improvement on ageing KM2s which stopped being made in 2015 ish.

I'm running KM3s as well and am really happy with the noise level in comparison to the Hankook muddies I had previously. I've got about 45,000KM on them and they are down to 6.5mm tread depth so are getting close to replacement, I might get 50,000 out of them but the 130 does a fair bit of shale based dirt road work frequently pulling a trailer so my wear rate probably isn't typical of a vehicle doing trips and bitumen work. I have been considering the Maxxis but maybe not so much if the on road performance isn't as good as the KM3s

When you say cracked at the rim to tyre junction, what exactly do you mean. Are they from the rim outwards OR around the rim? Was that on both sides of the tyre or just one?
Reason I ask is I've got a US made 255/85 that is only a few years old and has started cracking around the rim on the inside, about 15mm from the rim. It kind of looks like someone has run a knife around it. It doesn't go completely around (yet) and it is not uniform line like it is scraping against something.

a H/T tyre isn't LT rated and will probably not be load rated for a defender (would need to check the tyre of choice). LT tyres have thicker side walls and more robust carcass design. Any defender that travels on country roads or tows or carries weight should be running a LT tyre.

as you describe, a series of cracks in the rubber of the side wall about 10 to 15mm from the edge of the rim. Cracks in a circular pattern following the rim. Mine were on the outside of the tyre, I didn't check the inside as it was a moot point by then. The KM3s had done 2 Simpson crossings at 22psi loaded to 3.5T, umpteen number of weekend warrior trips as low as 12 psi. In my case its was fatigue failure where the soft flexible rubber was forced to compress and folder over the rim. I got 70,000kms out of them so no complaints and i accept the mode of failure was my doing not some inherent flaw in the tyre.

Other tyres on my consideration list (in 265/75-16 )
Nitto Ridge Grappler Nitto Tyres Australia - Ridge Grappler Hybrid Extreme-Duty Light-Truck 4x4 Tyre (https://nittotyre.com.au/tyres/4x4-tyres/ridge-grappler/)
Mickey Thompson Baja Boss Baja Boss A/T - Mickey Thompson Tires | 4x4 tyres (https://www.mickeythompsontires.com.au/our-range/baja-boss-at)
and maybe Wrangler Duratracs, although I didn't much like the MTRs that came as stock on the Defender

I love a tyre thread
I have 85k experience with Khumo KL71s
I dont know if they still make them but they were quieter than the Bridgestone 695s they replaced.
Uni directional , which was never a problem to me.
at 85,000km I took them off the D2 and put them on my daughters Triton for about another 20k , seriously.
I would fit them again if I was in the market for new tyres , but between the two sets of wheels , one a/t the other **** ht things they put on the factory which I alternate with when I'm not going bush , I still have a long way to go to replacement
