Hi guys....I have a 300tdi I have been the carer for 17 years...about 385,000 KMS
Done pretty much all the work on her myself...but this has got me really stumped...hoping someone might have a idea

I have a noise ..hard to explain but sounds like a power steering pump whine/squeal / groan...fairly high pitched...seems to come from drivers side of engine...heres the thing....its ONLY > in 3rd at 80 KPH > and in 4th/ 5th right on 95-100pkh...gets louder the more you try and put your foot down
so far I have
> replaced the brake servo and vaccum pump
> the Fan belt, idle pulley...
> the power steering pump...
> the fuel sender
> Fan centre mount thing ( the metal bit the fan blades go on)
> changed the oil and oil filter
> fuel filter

The noise appears about 3000 -3200 rpm..get louder..if you put your foot down..Im going to swap out the fuel lift pump tomorrow...> I thinking injector pump now???? > anyone had something similar > WHAT WAS IT?

The turbo seems to spin up fine...the rest of the drive train seems fine ( no noises under 80 kph anywhere(
( other than the normal squeaks ect)
oh...I cant seem to make it do it if its in neutral ..only happens if in gear as far as I can tell

Cheers fellas !

can you get a recording of it from different spots in the cab and listen back to them as i found that helped track down where it was coming from

i once chased a noise in one of my defenders that i swore was engine/ancillary and it ended up being transfer case related

sorry cannot help any more than that

best of luck getting to the bottom of it

Leaking turbo hose? I've had one do something similar under load in a Daihatsu Rocky years ago. Leaking just enough to make a noise but only under full boost and under certain conditions.

Pulley running dry or off centre, maybe on a belt?
Manifold gasket air leak?
Just wild guesses.

Firstly welcome!

I've recently had a transfer case failure preceded by a whine above 100km/h 2100rpm now gone with a replacement TC. Worn bearing suspected. The "not in neutral" would point me in a driveline direction particularly given the mileage.
