Vicroads suspect vehicle

Hey All,

I wasn't sure where to post so I thought I would start here.

I had my 1985 County 110 booked in at Vicroads today to be registered but I ran into an issue, the person at Vicroads said that the last digit on my chassis was unreadable and before she looked at the car that she couldn't find the car on their system, and now it's been classed as a suspect vehicle and I'm unable to register it until I hear back from them.

Has anyone run into this issue before and how long was it before Vicroads got back to you with and answer?

The car was on a Victorian club plate up until last week when I picked it up from the seller.

I did call Vicroads when I got home for some more clarification, but in the end the only answer they could give me is wait for us to contact you at a later date.

I’ve never had the issue but wonder if the “can’t find it on the system” might be related to the club plate.
Id be finding out what the club plate number was and doing some research along that line. It HAS to be in their system under that plate, regardless of any potential typos or misreading of Vin etc.

I suggest that you try and discern the last digit, and then advise them with a photo maybe highlighted with fluoro or something. They may have read it wrongly.

I had all the trouble in the World registering my caravan in NSW because the dorks at the original Victorian dealer had one letter out on the VIN.

1985 is not that old. I wonder if the Landrover dealer that sold it new might have records to help you if the paper work you got is not help?

I was given a very old item that was registered incorrectly. "942" rather than the stamped code. The 942 was '1942' the manufacture date [biggrin]. It is going to a museum in NSW as it was a one off pre-production of a jungle carbine WW2 303

I have had trouble a number of times that when I get my Rego renewal either the Eng or Chassis numbers are incorrect & changed from previous year, then have to take vehicle in for them to site numbers so can be corrected. Also find here in Qld you can ask 10 different people at QT a question & get 10 different answers. It is probably a typo from when last registered.

I had no trouble reading the last digit, the person who did the roadworthy last Tuesday 13/9/2022 had no trouble making out the last digit, only issues seems to be when I arrived at Vicroads to get it registered.

The person at Vicroads took pictures of the chassis number, the VIN plate in the engine bay and the front and rear of the car to be forwarded onto the department that handles these kind of issues, when I asked for a contact number or a refence number to follow things up I was told that they will contact me at a later date, no time frame was given just told to expect a call.

Would have to try and track down the original owner, the was no dealer stamp or contact in the glovebox manual that came with the car, I'm not even sure if it's always been a Victorian car.

Try regoing it at a different office.

If you can find out what club the previous owner belonged to for the "red plates" the club secretary would have all of the vehicles details - including all vin and chassis numbers.
