I will start by a saying that I am your go to with electrics, trim and body work and some basic engine work - but diffs, gearboxes and brakes are friggin voodoo art to me, hence the query.

I picked up another GS recently that is very agricultural - so much so that they had cut out body work to mount a pumpkin planting machine, so I’ll be firing up the welder this weekend. There is a lot that needs replacing as it basically hasn’t been serviced for 8 years. The rear diff is pretty noisy and I was looking at some of the axles at AFM this coming auction and was wondering, given I am going to be putting rear disks on anyway, what the work would be to convert the axle set up in a GS to us the RFSV front/rear axles? The ratios are different, so what else needs to be changed?

As an aside, I wish I had dash cam of my first drive in Dusty (it’s current name… may change) from the barn to the road, which was a couple of km down the driveway. It started first time and after loading up the spare parts I thought I best run through the gears to see if everything worked. It was all going fine - engine was sounding good - until I approached the end of the driveway. Doing +60Kph when I touched the brakes and realised nothing was happening there. After a little more excitement than necessary for that time of the day I managed to pull it up and then drive 14km into town using nothing more than engine braking to get it to somewhere I could have it shipped from.

Diffs will be bolt in, and should be the same ratio. Just make sure you don't buy 6x6 diffs.

I have ended up with so much 6x6 stuff over the years I feel like I could have built one…

I am looking at a few of the complete axles on AFM, but some of the prices lately have been ridiculous
