1995 facelift: Front Axle - changes?

Hi,

My neighbour is considering replacing the entire front axle assembly in his pre95 d1 with a replacement from a post95 d1. Does this work?

94 was the Facelift but mechanical update came in late 93 from 10 to 24 splines and 3.5 to 3.9 with serpentine belt.
So anything late 93 and up will be fine.

I think some things to be aware of is if the post 95 axle came from a D1 that had ABS.
Not a problem to fit, they all fit, but the thing to be mindful of is if at some future time you need to replace the swivel bearings, the upper swivel pins and bearings are different between the two types.
Obviously you can't use abs type swivel bearings with non abs type swivel pins, and vice versa.

ABS swivel balls housings have a different part number compared to non ABS type swivel housings too.

So the brake type used from the donor vehicle should be factored in.

Parts are cheap and easy to find so not worth bodging a fix.

Aside from the ABS, my recollection is that there were some other brake differences (although I may be confusing things with the county/defender). Some d1s had dual circuit front calipers and I’m pretty sure there was also a change in caliper to swivel hub bolts at some point (possibly from imperial to metric??)
Were vented front discs also introduced with the update or did d1’s always have them?

Another hit and miss thing.
I think all abs brakes are vented, but not all vented brakes are abs(maybe).

But, you could get either vented or solid all the way to the last model.

Ditto my abs '96.

The donor axle is now in service. It came with radius arms, sway bar, brake calipers, abs sensors. The chassis doesn't accommodate a sway bar, the original calipers had to be used due to the brake circuit changes, no abs so Pete has accumulated a pile of spares most of which are only good for my truck - nice!
