View Full Version : Could someone have a look at a Discovery in Canberra for me?

Hi guys,

In followup to my Canberra rego question I have called the owner of the vehicle and it hasn't sold yet (been 3 months apparently).

Is there a really nice Canberra Aulroian who would be able to go and have a look at it for me? Just to find out general condition such as rust and how it drives etc. Don't need to be a mechanic.
She assures me it is in good nick and has no rust and only one small dent but as nice as she sounds she didn't seem to know cars at all and she might not notice these types of things.

This is the car in question.

I don't know disco's to well but I could have a look at it for you.

If you (or anyone) could that would be great. I'm not after a thorough mechanical inspection and I expect a few issues with a $5500 car. I basically just want to know that it drives ok and isn't a rust bucket (she said it can't have any rust as it is made of aluminium :o).

I have just realised I have absolutely no idea whereabouts in Canberra she lives (or you live). However I drove to Perisher last year and passed through Canberra. That was my one and only time there and it did not appear too big a city. However I am sure it is much bigger than it looked.

I will call her tomorrow and post up her suburb to give you and others a better indication of its whereabouts and therefore how far it would be to travel.

Thanks.

Many of the panels are aluminium but there are still lots of opportunities for rust in door pillars, cargo floor, chassis, etc. Visual inspection should soon reveal if there are any major problems. Since it's in Canberra it's unlikely to have spent too much time on the beach, but you never know. ;)
It looks in very good nick in the photos, I know nothing about V8's so I can't offer any advice on what to look for there, but so long as it drives well it looks like a bargain! :)

Thanks for the rust tips but I knew that various parts were steel but she didn't. One Disco I looked at had so much rust in the roof gutter I thought the roof would blow off if you opened the front windows:o

I called her back and she lives in the suburb of Downer. So George if you live near there or if anyone else does could you please have a look? I'll organise it with her but your general look over and test drive would be greatly appreciated.

It looks pretty good to me, interior is well looked after and the paint looks clean and tidy. Has it got service history?

It certainly looks good in the photos. Can't see any rust around the alpine window that is visible.
I didn't ask about service history. I have yet to look at a Disco that has had a full history actually. Although what I am most concerned about is rust. Anything else is a relatively easy fix.

The photos do make it look promising though.

OK. I pass near that way on the way to and from work. I will arrange to look at it for you. As for close to home I am an hour out of town.

George (or is it Edd and George is the 130?)

That would be fantastic :)

Would you like me to tee up a time or would you prefer to call her direct? She seems very nice and easy to deal with.

Thanks I really appreciate it. It is a bit daunting considering flying down to look at the car and it makes me feel better knowing someone will have had a general look over it first.

I'll call her in the morning to let her know I have someone lined up. Could you please let me know if your name is Edd or George. Just in case she gets more than your call so she knows 'your with me'.

I can have a look at it later this week - unfortunately I am out of town the next couple of days so if Ed cannot make it let me know.

The main issue in a 95 model will be a worn output gearbox shaft/worn input cog in the transfer case. If it hasn't been fixed earlier it will show up in a test drive if the wear is there - extra slack in the drive train.

If it is a Canberra car there will not be any rust - at its age it will most likely have the usual disco gremlins but all which can be fixed.

As I said - I can check it on Friday or on the weekend if needed.

Cheers

Garry

Thanks for the offer Garry.

I'll see how Edd goes but dependant on what he says I would like to fly down this weekend and buy it. She says it has been on the market for 3 months but if it is as good as she says and for the price I don't want to wait to long. If it was in Qld at that price it would have sold in the first week I think.
The first thing I'll do when I get it back is to fix the part you mentioned if it hasn't been already.

Are you coming down this week to get it if it is ok? If so come down pick the car up and come to the BBQ at my place on the weekend with Ed, you could pick the car up on friday stay at eds or something friday night come with ed to the BBQ on saturday stay the weekend and drive back home on the monday. Just a suggestion. Good luck with it. Matt

Depending on how things go I will be down on the weekend to pick it up. Not sure if I could pull 2 days off work though at the moment. Maybe one day off. I was thinking of having a quick look around. I've only been to Canberra twice. Once on the way to Perisher and once on the way back. On the way back I stopped for diesel and that was it.

I wouldn't want to put Edd out any more than I already have though considering I don't even know him. I might get a room somewhere though.
I could fly down Sat morning, buy the car, come to the bbq, stay somewhere Sat night, have a look around Sun and drive home Sun afternoon.

The main thing that pains me is being so close to the snow and not being able to get a snowboard day in:(

What time of day is your bbq and which suburb?

Ed,
I just called the seller and let her know that you would be calling her sometime to arrange a look.

Thanks.

Sorry mate the BBQ is about 3 hours away in Lithgow, if you were going to drive it home stopping lithgow on the saturday night for the BBQ wouldnt be to much out of your way. We are heading out 4wding on both the saturday and the sunday with a bonfire/BBQ on the saturday night. Matt

Utemad
1st August 2006, 10:37 AM
Well Ace I'll see how it goes. Might be better to go to the bbq and see Canberra another time when my wife can make the trip too.

Plus 4wding on the first day of owning a car is pretty appealing..........I think.

George130
1st August 2006, 07:16 PM
OK. I had a quick look at it. The body seems quite strait and clean. The interior is also very neat. It got dark before I could look under or through the engine bay but what I could see looked ok. The car has NSW rego she has only been here for 3 months. THe short drive I had the car seemd comfortable and smooth. There is a noticable tick from the engine on the passengers side but I don't know how common that is. Also the clutch engages very early on but then its been quite some time since I drove a manual.
She has never taken it off road. Bought it to tow the horse float after her mum owned a Rangie. THe rear shocks have been replaced since it came to Canberra.

Lithgow. Ace it looks like Lachlan and I are comming.

Utemad If you wan't to go to ACE'S then we can arrange a convoy. We would need to on the road bye 5-6 am as its 3 to 4 hours on the black top or 5 hours taking the back roads (All dirt). Let me know if you are interested. I can arrange accomodation for you here friday if your interested or we can sort things out.

Utemad
1st August 2006, 09:09 PM
Thanks very much for looking at the car Edd. By the sounds of it I'll be flying down and buying it :)

Does anyone want to comment on Edd's findings?
To me it sounds as though the engine tick would be either a dry lifter or an exhaust leak. How do you adjust the tappets on these motors?

As for the clutch she told me she had never changed it and has owned the car since 120k (now 190k). So perhaps it was changed at 100k and needs a new one at 200k? Especially since it has been towing horsies. I thought that thing above your left knee position in the photo was an electric brake controller.

As for when I come down that will depend partly on when I can meet up with the seller and work. I might take the early Virgin flight down saturday morning and then make my own way to Ace's bbq and meet up with you all when you arrive back at camp. I've got GPS navigation gear that will get me wherever I need to get along with CDMA phones and portable UHF radios so I am sure I will be able to get in contact.
I'll also be bringing an assortment of screwdrivers, spanners, electrical tape and zip ties ;)

Boy this is getting exciting

George130
1st August 2006, 09:14 PM
She said the same to me. Apparently another bloke looked at it at lunch time. I was non comittal but said I would pass on the info tonight and leave it in your hands. My thoughts was exhaust or lifter for the ticking.

Utemad, Edd and Ace - I'm looking at some wheels and tyres advertised on here, and wondering if there's a way of getting them from Canberra with you (Utemad) if there's some other way of getting them from Ballarat to the Canberra region. I'm based in Toowoomba and can go to Brisbane, or further if needed, to collect. I'm also very happy to contribute to petrol costs.

Also, I'd appreciate if you could get me an idea of how many you could carry, if you can. I could be looking at up to 10 :S

If anyone else has ideas, please let me know.

Hope it goes well for you, Utemad, but you might need to change your name - maybe Discomad is available?

I have some really bad news :(

I called her back this morning and it was sold :(:(:(:(

What's worse is it sold for $4800!!! :(:(:(:(
I would have given her at least $5000 if not the whole $5500!!! People want $8-10k for a vehicle like that in Qld.

Sorry to put you out Edd.

At least now I know to keep my eyes open for vehicles down that way as they are way way cheaper than in Qld.

Bugger bugger bugger.

Scrambler I don't know how many wheels would fit in the back of a Disco but as for the name maybe instead of changing it I should just chop the wagon?

Garry,
I did originally want an auto due to what I considered an excessively heavy clutch with the manuals. However as I haven't been driving my light clutched Rodeo anymore but have been test driving manual Disco's I don't think the clutch is that heavy anymore. It is a strange feeling.
The rebuild cost of the autos scares me too. Especially with those kms.

Dave,
I was originally pretty peeved. I mean if someone offers you $4800 for your asked $5500 car and you have another buying looking at it, wouldn't you ask the other buyer what he is willing to offer at least?
I was going to say I'll give you $5000 plus you get your rego cashed in. That's life though.

On the up side I have called about another vehicle in Sydney.
http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.private_vehicle'vehicle_id=2984779&current_rec=6&used_rec=5&total_rec=13&sort_type=&total_rec=13&sort_type=&make_id=18&model_id=52&price_max=10000&state_id=2 (http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/%21cs_content.private_vehicle'vehicle_id=2984779&current_rec=6&used_rec=5&total_rec=13&sort_type=&total_rec=13&sort_type=&make_id=18&model_id=52&price_max=10000&state_id=2)
Pretty much the same car with about another 10000 kms and a LR tank instead of a bullbar. Although it is silver with a few scratches and a funny dent in the front lip of the bonnet which was there when he bought it. I'd love to know how it happened.
When I called I asked him to email me some full res photos so I could get a better look, which he did.
He is a member of the Range Rover Club of NSW (or Sydney?) so someone here might know of the car.

Sorry to hear about that mate, i have seen one in bathurst for sale but dont have any details nor have i seen it in a while, but i havent really been there much lately. If i see it again i will get some getails. They have had $7500 on it but it has been for sale for a while so you would probably get it cheaper.

Bummer about missing the BBQ aswell, but it happens.

For future regerence i bought 5 wheels with 31in tyres on ebay in 04 and fit all of them in the disco with the rear seats folded down, i wouldnt have gotten any more in. I dont know how many you would get in if they didnt have tyres. I reckon you would get 10 in with the seats folded down. Matt

I have hat 5 cruiser steel rims with tyres and 5 landy rims in the back of the Fender. I Could probably fit the 10 tyres without anything else in there. The biggest hassle would be picking them up and getting them up your way. No idea what courier costs would be.

Utemad
Sorry it sold. She gave me the impression she would give you a chance to contact her. I told her I would pass the info on that night so it would be up to you what you were doing. Keep looking and theright one will jump out. A Long range tank would be harder to find second hand than a Bull bar so it could be a good move.

I know of a really good Series 1 Disco for sale in Sydney if you're interested.

One of our technicians bought it off the original owner last year but it's too good to go off road with. He's now looking for an older RR.

It's a 1997 build, 1998 sold 3.9 auto.
Full LR service history & has travelled only 90000km.
Colour is Epsom Green & it's the "S" model without Air Bags & ABS (which is a plus;) ).

He's asking $9500 ono.

Sounds like a good one but as you said it is too good to take off road. I'm not too keen on buying a $9500 Disco and then turning it into a $5000 Disco in a few weeks:D

The Sydney guy hasn't got back to me yet.

Thanks Weeds. Although I'm looking for a 94-98 model so I get the updated D1 model. There seems to be a huge amount of 94-95 models in comparison to 96-98 though. Wonder why that is.

Got some to look at this weekend that are a little closer to home. However they cost more than the NSW ones but I might be able to bargain them down. Would save the hassle of a flight and getting a new RWC etc but I do like a road trip :)

I dont either the 98-99 models are a better buy cause the Lucas electrics were scrapped and replaced with the Bosch, which is what mine has.

I'm sure I'll figure it out. I'm pretty handy when it comes to auto electrics. It's the mechanical repairs I'll learn most about when I get the Disco. I haven't needed to do much with the mechanical side of things as I've only owned Jappers:p
