This afternoon I thought it had dried out enough to try to get to the village. After nearly getting bogged a couple of times in my place, I drove through the creek a bit too enthusiastically, and, stopping at the next gate to open it, the engine stopped. And refused to start. So I called my next door neighbor whose place this is on. As the battery was a bit low I asked him to bring jumpers. When he arrived, he said he could not find the jumper leads, so said he would tow start me.

Not a kick out of the engine. Obviously got water somewhere in the ignition. So I accepted his offer to tow me home (about two kilometres). We nearly got bogged a couple of times, but the tow rope was long enough that he was clear of the soft spot by the time I was in it.

So I came home on the end of a tow rope behind a Hilux!

The 2a has been languishing since Monday - starter not working now, probably rust on the Bendix.

Yesterday I pulled it into the workshop with a small hand puller since the starter clearly needed to come out, and i prefer to do this on a concrete floor. Took most of the day.

So today I pulled the starter off, and sure enough, the pinion was sticking on the spiral. So I ran the pinion back by hand, wire brushed the spiral, and flushed the loosened rust off with contact cleaner. After it had dried I coated it in graphite powder and rubbed this in by repeatedly running the pinion back and forth. A bench test held in a vice confirmed it was now working. Then put it back.

Having completed this job, I am now convinced that the original exhaust setup with the pipe coming up and out from the manifold must have been to allow reasonable access to the starter. It is possible to work round the exhaust pipe, but especially getting the starter in and out you need to know exactly how to twist and tilt it.

A Hilux, oh the shame of it [emoji20]. Chalk another one up to the Prince of Darkness…

Don.

Yes, on Monday. Wednesday, having had to go to town for appointments and food, on the way home I took the alternative track to the house because of how close i was to getting bogged going in, I got thoroughly bogged about 1.2km from the house and walked home carrying an esky with the refrigerator and freezer stuff. Thursday the neighbor on the other side came over and spent most of the morning helping me get out of that bog and the other two places I got bogged before the house. I have no plans to go anywhere for probably a fortnight.
