View Full Version : tyre splitting but warranty refused

Has anyone had the misfortune of a tyre splitting around the tyre about 10-15mm from the rim and then being denied warranty because the tyres were run at "too low a pressure"

Tyres were purchased in early to mid 2020 and have manufacture date of mid 2019 and have done about 10-15000kms. Tyres have not been run at excessively low pressure.

BFG?

Correct. And forget to mention the tyre in question was imprinted with Made in USA.

Def 130.

KM3 255/85/r16

typically 32-35 front and 40-44 rear

haven't really done much off-roading that necessitates lowering pressures since I got this set.

I got approx. 85000km out of the previous KM2's and they were regularly lowered down to 15-18 and occasionally even lower for short times without any sidewall splitting.

The son had KM2 and later KM3 with no issues, same size,on the Puma.
He ran mainly 38 to 40 PSI all round on the black top.

There was a bit of chatter by the Jap brigade about a similar issue.
But looking back they were a 6yr old worn out set of KO2 with splits in the sidewall near the tread.

Tyre warranties in Australia are BS and not worth the paper they are written. Unless the tyres have been "professionaly rotated" at the correct time and is documented who and when it was done they will not speak to you about any problems.

I have personal experience in Canada were a nearly worn out tyre was replaced no cost to me because it sustained road damage - had a sidewall split in it.

Good luck!

I’m seeing on other forums that BFG are being arseholes about warranty claims.
Their usual response is that you are running too low pressures.
Suggest you keep at them.

Have you got a pic of the splitting? My Pirellis did that but it never progressed and has never been a problem. The tyres are over 10 years old now and nothing has ever come of it. It may not be the same thing though,.

Bridgestone truck tyres used to do that, they never failed, allowing full use of the tread, but no retreaders would give the tyre a second life. A retreadable case was worth $100, last century.
Toyo offered an excellent steer tyre. They tweaked it, causing premature wear of the shoulders. Toyo would recognise claims, compensating fleets, but refused recognition to owner drivers.
I used Toyo exclusively on all my vehicles up to that time, I have never bought a Toyo tyre since. That's over thirty years of tyre sales they have lost.
