Hi all,
A bit of a noob question. As i'm going about looking for my perfect D4 online, I'm wondering if I can tell from the VIN whether the car I'm looking at has the optional E-diff fitted in the rear?
Many thanks for your assitance.
Cheers,
Andrew

No, the existence or absence of an e-diff is not part of the VIN.

Previously you could use the vin to decode on Topix to see what options the car was built with, but the functionality has been removed :-(

Quick squizz under the rear or asking for a photo from the owner should confirm it, there should be a large control box and solenoid housing sticking out of the diff, it was a pretty expensive option so not common.

Put the car in the off road raised position and look through the drivers side rear wheel arch. You'll see the control box on the side of the diff.

If you're buying from a car yard they won't have a clue, so be somewhat clever when you are checking and don't mention it. Otherwise they'll ask a higher price. That's what I did, and the yard didn't have a clue mine had the e-diff.
I told them as I was driving out after having paid for the car! [bigsmile]

Hopefully someone is more accurate then me, but the E diff was only $1000 extra, I was told by the sales rep, you don't need it.. The terrain response is so good!

If the terrain response on the rear is as good as the front. Then there are right.

Yep the option was around $1000…
I’ve had one with (2.7L) and one without (3.0L) and been to some interesting places.
Not missed the ediff.

Given the scarcity of newer D4’s I wouldn’t make the absence of an ediff a deal breaker (especially in the late models) and am very happy with my “non ediff” model

Do you know the URL of the Topix thread that has been removed?

If it was there it probably is still. Web Time Machine allows archived sites to specific years or dates (https://archive.org/web/).

It was behind a login point - I dare say way back machine won’t have it :-(
