View Full Version : Avoid the Quadlock useless vent mount....

Quick one for everyone:

Despite its apparent suitability (according to the quadlock instructions) their vent mount is unusable in a D4. The torque required to mount/dismount the phone to the mount rips your plastic vent pieces out in short order...

A shame, as the phone case and the wireless pad are excellent. I'm going to order the adhesive mount and see how it goes. Will report back.

Hmmm. Bugger. I can’t use the windscreen mount as the phone overheats in the sun. I was hoping to use a vent mount for the cooling it provides.

Well I've got a brand new one I can sell you (!) But trust me, it's crap...

I'm going for the adhesive one: I have a magnetic gimbal one down by the left knee on the centre console, which is actually a great discrete mount. Only replacing because the wife and I both now have quadlock cases... I'll post pictures once installed.

I have used a windscreen mount for the Quad lock for many many years. In the direct sun the mount does occasionally fall off, but never had an issue with the phone overheating. Been a massive fan of quad locks since finding them for riding adventure and enduro bikes through the outback and bush (those days are gone though [bigsad]).
My windscreen quad lock mount is hard up against the A pillar rather than in the centre of the screen, maybe that keeps the phone cooler??

You might also have a genuine UV/heat filtering windscreen? Mine’s a non-genuine. Mine would stop being able to run Spotify and maps, music would cut out etc.

Since then I’ve gone to CarPlay anyway so I don’t need it in front of me aside from looking at the GAP on occasion.

You should still be able to get these mounts from HoldMyPhone.

Mounts Car Dash Mounts Land Rover Discovery 4 (https://www.holdmyphone.com.au/Land-rover/discovery-4/carphone/mounts)

I have the Centre Mount, though I now think that the Angled Console mount would have been a better choice. The Centre mount positions your phone behind the left side of your steering wheel and you have to lean over to see the screen if you want to look at it. They are good mounts though - don't need to drill any holes in your dash - they just clip in and never move, and you can attach any type of phone mount you like to the bracket. I have a cradle for the iPhone which includes charging and also connection via a signal booster to a large aerial on the bullbar - I get uninterrupted signal between Kalgoorlie & Perth and pretty good coverage when crossing the Nullarbor.

You can see in the pic below how the vision of the phone is partially blocked by the steering wheel in mine.

While I don’t own a disco I do know the amount off effort required to unlock, I argue if any vent would stand up to it.

We run two quad lock cordless mounts in our defer……

Does it hold over bumps?

Seems to be holding up, have been driving heaps of corrugations of late no issue

I was hoping the rate of charge might have been better…..maybe a slight improvement

Can’t really blame the vent strength to describe the mount as useless.

I run a mag-lock version on my D4 using the adhesive mount

On the RRS we have the adhesive mount to the left of the console.

Both work perfectly.

Also run mounts on both MTBs, the Katana, the Defender.
Perfect solutions are to be had [emoji41]

Does it hold over bumps?

Have had phone pop/fall off once so far……not to bad given the strength of the magnet, i was expecting it to pop off a bit more often.

Isn’t suitable for an ipad, we stuck a mount to the ipad which was primarily for watching movies when in bed which the magnetic holds it nicely.

I've tried a few different vent mounts and agree most are too flimsy. I bought one of these and thought for the money if it doesn't work no great loss. When it arrived I was quite surprised how strong it was. It locks in well and doesn't move and looks good not sticking out too far, moreover it comes with a ball mount that fits my Garmin which I wasn't expecting. I've since ordered another one for the phone.

Did you have the 'old' charge head in the past? I'm running the twist version, but find the phone stops charging quickly due to heat... Wondering if the newer model, which looks larger, may have fixed this...

I bought a charge head, mounted on the windscreen to the right of the steering wheel, and I haven't noticed any failure to charge due to heat.

We upgraded both our from the twisty type to the mag type…..

We reckon slower charge rate and regularly get the message it’s stopped charging due to heat…..never had the massage come up in the twist type.

We have a 2000 defender with average after market A/C

Cheers guys

I now suspect a combination of factors - wireless charging generates heat anyway, plus a smaller phone (I have an iPhone mini) to dissipate that heat, inside a case, running CarPlay/Waze/Spotify and on occasion in full sun (mounted on a suction mount to the right of the steering wheel). The laws of thermodynamics will catch up eventually...

Hi Tombie, are you able to give us a bit more info on which quad lock you use and where you attach it please?

I want to get one for my Disco, and am hoping to attach it to the small plastic area to the left of the instrument cluster. I had a look at the quad lock adhesive mount in BCF but I don’t see how it’s long enough or would have the range of movement to work there.

I see online you can design your own. Is this the avenue you went down?

Any advice would be much appreciated as it seems you’ve set it up exactly how I’d want to.

Cheers!
