Interesting images there. Any idea why some of the SWBs (eg at 51 secs) have sloping front mudguards?

I thought it was to deflect pressure waves from the gun buggy’s own gun,

Cut back to generally stop the guards melting when the 106 is fired [biggrin]

In my RAEME time ( 72 to 76 ) I never saw one like that, so I would guess it was an 'in theatre' mod. Could be wrong. never went to Vietnam.

They were modified with thicker floors etc, a few have survived. I even saw one on a Melbourne Street once- pretty scary with the barrel pointed your way..
This one was in Bandiana Army Museum a few years ago.

I was at Bandiana in '73. Should make a pilgrimage.. I believe they might have a LARC-V there?

All the gunbuggies I have seen had this mod. Probably not to stop the actual mudguard from melting, but to stop the sidelights and blinkers from melting.

I guess that puts paid to my "in theatre" theory. Nobody over there would have given a toss about sidelights and blinkers.

I can't be certain of my memory, but I think this was present on the one that was demonstrated to us when I was in an army cadet camp in 1958 while I was in highschool. It must have been a prototype I suspect.

My understanding was the guards were sloped to prevent them folding up when the gun was fired. And in answer to a comment above, none of the Gunbuggies I've seen, including mine, have thicker floors.
