An existential question regarding AULRO

I'm about to have a new Defender. (Yes I know it's not a real one...raspberry)

My previous two Land Rovers have worn the "AULRO" number plates in appreciation of the value of this place.

So my questions to the choir are:

Is AULRO relevant anymore given the ubiquity of social media?

Should I transfer the AULRO plates from my old Defender to my new one or let them pass?

Absolutely this space is relevant!

I'm late to the Land Rover party (apart from driving them in the Army), my first one was a D2 purchased 2015. My signature block shows my decline into madness.

Without this resource I may have purchased a Toyota or some other such meaningless vehicle, with no heritage, no lineage, no individuality. Yes, there are fan boys/pages/forums etc to other brands but how many of them have anniversary gatherings? How many have the camaraderie that exists (although it appears to be slowly fading) within the Land Rover fraternity.

If I want to know something about my vehicle, be that an issue or maintenance, or planning accessories. This is my first port of call.

I usually check in here daily for a good read and (usually) a laugh. I have found new friends, new music, new problems with my car [bigsad].

There is a mutual respect within these pages and I for one applaud Incisor for his dedication and often patience with this place.

I'm also on FB AULRO but I don't feel it has the same level of commitment from the participants.

As for the AULRO forum, this place has plenty of relevance and I suspect it will for many years to come, as Ray posted, thanks to Incisor and his hard work.

I use to go to about 30 to 40 different forums and most have gone.

I have no idea of which ones are still there because they were just not worth the time.

Whereas, again as pointed out by Ray, there is a hell of a lot more to this site than just a make of vehicles.

The social benefits of this site far out weigh anything so called social media can offer.

Through my business, I deal with many new Land Rover owners, who, in many cases, have never heard of AULRO, but I have no problem pointing them in the right direction, because they will not find the incredible wealth of Land Rover info that this site offers, anywhere else.

Stick the plates on your new Defender.

IMO only you can answer that one, but I'll say this: I think AULRO is very relevant because of the ubiquity of "social" media. Most sites they call social media, and as Tim says, most forums, have devolved into nothing more than background noise. Nobody really knows the other, and "friends" are not friends. I have recently spent a few months away from here. I was sorting some things out in my life and found it distracting. I met up with V8Ian about a month ago, and he suggested coming back. I said no. And then I remembered something; about five years ago I suffered a personal loss I struggled to cope with. I took the liberty of ranting about it here. The amount of support I got from people I had never personally met was overwhelming, and humbling. There is no way I would have received that on any other platform. Here, we can talk, joke, rib each other, and, as I discovered, reach out in time of need. I am not exaggerating when I say that AULRO was a part of what kept me alive. So, I realised that I missed this silly place. I currently do not have any working Land Rovers, but I still have friends. AULRO's relevance has only increased with time.

Absolutely not. Post them to me! No, of course you should fit 'em to the new one. Everything changes, everything moves on. I remember when the D3 was not a "proper" LR. When your new one starts to leak, or comes home on a tow truck, it'll fit right in[bigsmile]

Given that I have a foot in both camps due to the majority of members of my family having a pair of X chromosomes and a Jeep fetish to match, there is no equivalent to AULRO out there for the Jeep community. Social media is difficult to maintain any history on and does not serve well as an archive of people's experience.
I can put a Land Rover query into Google and the majority of times AULRO features high in the results, the real test however is when an "out there" question is asked and the brains trust drags little known facts and accurate information that would probably not be available anywhere else.

New models will come and go and your AULRO plates are just as fitting on a new Defender, I even got a wave from one the other day in the 130 [biggrin]

As others have pointed out, this place is ongoing. Members come and go, but their contributions remain. I have another couple of interests that only seem to have active communities on FB, or Meta or whatever it's called today, but the people, and their comments are fleeting and untraceable. Fine if one has the attention span of a goldfish, not so good if a continuing dialogue is to be maintained.

AULRO is a treasure.

I'm only on one other forum and it has similar functions as AULRO i.e. subject matter info, get togethers, travel info and lots of humour. I have noticed with it though, that it seems to be declining a little, in a way I can't quite put my finger on.

AULRO doesn't appear to have this issue.

Gawd! The only thing I have against AULRO, is that our property would probably enjoy more maintenance time. [smilebigeye]

Whilst I own a 4bd1 converted 130. I find that i read all posts re all types of vehicles on this forum. The probability of owning a new defender or a D4/3 or a D2 at this stage is pretty remote. Saying that AULRO is my got o site most days and i read all new posts. Who knows one day someone may need assistance and i can say I read about that issue, and this was how it was solved.
