Morning all,

A few questions about about replacing the transfer case on my D3. Background first.

Car is a March 2005 TDV6 S, manual gearbox with air suspension, 531,000 km.

Transfer case is making a noticeable but not bad sound that suggests bearing noise, my excellent indie repairer agrees, and Sunday's fluid change found metal in the old fluid, image attached.

Front diff recently rebuilt after bearing noise, done by the brilliant Max Deburgh who's the go-to man here in Perth WA for LR gearbox and diff rebuilds. He noticed that the diff was a different ratio than the usual auto car diffs he does.

I'm looking to get a second hand replacement transfer case and rebuild my original.

Questions therefore relate to the fitment of the S/H transfer case behind the manual gearbox before I rush out and buy anything: Are all D3 (TDV6; and 4.0 V6 and 4.4 V8 petrol) transfer cases the same (and D4 with 2.7, 3.0 and 5.0 P for that matter), in fitment and ratio? Are the auto and manual gearbox cases the same - will they fit both, and are they the same ratios?

Appreciate your advice, and thanks in anticipation. Nathan

Advanced Factors UK sells a full bearing kit for the TC. They also sell the internal chain and parts. Also for the diffs.

Impressive kms and impressive lifespan on those units.

LR Time just did a video removing the TC on a 3.0. I don’t think they differ)

In Microcat 2012 all D3s regardless of engine and gearbox use the same transfer case part number. The part number has superseded to LR008206 which is for all D4s, RRS, L322 regardless of engine or gearbox (manual/6-speed auto/8-speed auto) up to at least the end of 2012.

Correction: the above part number is for the exchange reconditioned TC but all TC part numbers supersede to the same part fitted to at least MY14 vehicles.
