View Full Version : Relocating the fire extinguisher

I've located the extinguisher on the rear door:

The holes in the extinguisher holder coincide with the fixings of the door card (125mm centre to centre). Some longer bolts, some rubber foam behind and there it is.

I'd have to say it would have been pretty hard to miss! [bigwhistle]

Well strictly speaking and in a vain attempt to deny you the pleasure you take in exploiting the ambiguity so often manifest in the English language I should have said it was a relocation from one Defender to another. Accordingly the thread has been re-titled. [tonguewink]

Corrected....I hope all your difficulties are that easily fixed.

I have always been concerned where to fix these things & it ain't easy.

D1. Alongside Driver's seat so it can be grabbed as you bale out. My preference, but each vehicle presents a problem or 2 & you do not want it loose in the cab proper for even a slight collision & electrics are damaged

Rear of vehicle as shown above.

What happens if you are rear ended? Door jammed?

In our Mazda CX3 there is no place except loose in the boot which again is not ideal.
A Rear ender means the lid may be jammed & while access can be obtained from Inside, you have to get passengers out to lift the seat "do flikkie." In the meantime the vehicles is going up in smoke.

Even if rear access is ok you may need to pull out half a ton of Misc rubbish before activating the Fire Ex.

In all my years of operating Hi-Ace vans there were obvious locations, but sedans seem to be ignored by Manufacturers. Maybe they should be fitted with a "Pull the Cable Central system" & fill the car from Front bumper to Rear bumper with powder or CO2 which could be operated from outside. TiC. [biggrin]

Points well made.

I think of it as not being to save me but for coming across a situation where it's needed to save someone else.

Points well made.

I think of it as not being to save me but for coming across a situation where it's needed to save someone else.

Sure, admirable thinking but the above is always a possibility once you hit the Macadam but not necessarily.

Case in point. I had some elec work done on the D1 V8i needing a battery connection. One of the cables shorted to earth due it being run over a hot pipe from the heater without any sleeving on it. I know, don't say it.[bigsad] Feed to the new elec Rad Fan I think it was

I was about to hit it with the Fire ext when a bloke came out of the nearby pub, said he was an Auto Elec & proceeded to hit it out with his hands. IDJIT! Main damage was the overhead Bonnet sound proofing but it could have got worse quite quickly.
He didn't even want me to buy him a pint to make up for the pain he must have felt.

2nd bit of bad luck that evening, as I was on the way to the specialist only for him to tell me my diagnosis was Prostate Ca. Still here though.:Thump::Rolling:

EDIT. BTW, I have seen these fixed to the rear face of the D1 Cubby Box but still not ideal as it would get in the way of Rear seat Passengers.

That's good! I don't know whose bad idea having a prostate was! Mine has had to be dealt with!

After 6mths of tests and trials I had a Green Light Laser Prostatectomy. Best thing I've ever done.

This is about firextinguishers. Get your prostate checked and fixed , you'll be ****ing like a fire extinguisher afterwards , something you've actually forgotten you could do if you're over 50. Remember when you could stand at the latrine and write your name and the thunderous sound on the stainless?.......well I can do it again now. So could you.

Be a man and face it....dont walk around with a catheter to be changed every month and a leg bag to empty every day....get it fixed.

please......dont PM me to discuss it......see your GP or your favourite urologist.

The irony of my one was he insisted on Surgery so he could have a shufti around in there Fair enough, but recent events with a new urologist show that was a bad move & a couple of months ago I found that he was the only bloke who until recently here did the surgery & all done these days by remote. Of course #1 had retired. &%#@*(%#

He at that time disapproved of this method but procedures change for the better & & so I is stuck with the following problem. No Bag or Catheter though just my good friend TENA. Probably a better payment with Surgery. [bigsad] Have been back & had a Urethral sling fitted but still no better.

Ho hum such is life.

Oh if only I could turn the clock back!

On Fire Extinguisher. Iota. Glad to see the one fitted appears to be a 2 KG. You never know just when one will need that extra burst.

Jeeeeezuz! Having had Horses stabled here in the good old days of a Farm property when the nags ****ed in the exact same spot for some reason, a couple of years ago I discovered such a well worn hole in the stable floor & when I put my head in & yelled out the answer was in Chinese I think it was.
"Wot you want Aussie? You want flied lice?" it said.

You can imagine my surprise, & was taken aback so much I fell into the hole. Mind you, horses were stabled here on & off for over 100 years, so I'm told by the Rescue Services that retrieved me.
:Thump::Rolling:

If you believe that you will believe anything, but the hole was true, but not the Chinese Chef. Possibly.

Dunno, but you da man John, as it was in my imagination only.:Rolling::Rolling::Rolling:

Maybe not for AC fires, but a Parachute mounted in the tail or near the cockpit can let a plane down sort of gently.

Like to see one used on an A380 though.
There'd be coffee cups & Laptops etc all over the joint.:Thump::Rolling:

Seems they are still in existence & still make/made Fire suppression systems for Ac including Concord. As it happens they are part of United Technologies which Carrier Air Conditioning also are & a Company I had many pleasant & successful years with as a Dealer.

Ah....the things we live with. I could write a long list of things I cant fix. I've left an apostrophe out for a good reason as I'm often guilty of it.

The fact that we do live with them has to be of some solace, don't you think?

Probably write a book on errant apostrophes. Although I expect somebody already has.

In the scheme of things it doesn't really matter. I understood what you writ.[biggrin]

As Jack Hawkins said to his officers In The Cruel Sea, "Blah Blah but no biggy but it is good if you get these things right" or words to that effect, but in his case he was getting a Corvette, Compass Rose, ready for it's first voyage so maybe a bit more important than an apostrophe being in the right place or even there at all. :Rolling::Rolling::Rolling:

As the author I own the thread....so I can say when it's OK.

The thread was started to show something that did not require having in-depth discussion about solving a problem. Its value was the first post. But the banter after was interesting and didn't affect the intent.

So cogitate on that.

I haven't dictated who can post, nor can I or would I.

I have not prevented anyone from saying what they post.

But if I think something is out of line I'll call it out as have you.

But civility goes a long way here and I respect this place for that.

So can we call a truce?
