Hello RandRover and Don130,
It was good to watch the Dakar on SBS this afternoon. However, I seem to miss the coverage of Australian rally driving. Has coverage of Australian rallies gone solely to paid TV?
Kind regards
Lionel

Yes Lionel I think it is mainly Pay TV, the only place you might see a bit of Aus Rallying on Free Tv is Speedweek 2022 | SBS On Demand (https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/sports-series/speedweek-2022)
Cheers,
Randy

Hello Randy,
I thought the pay TV was the way of things. Most times when I flick over to Speedweek just on the off chance there is every type of motor sport shown except for rally cars.
Kind regards

Hello All,
Looks like there could be some good news this year with Australian rallies and free to air coverage - accessed 3rd January 2023 from Free-to-air TV boost for rally – RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (https://www.rally.com.au/free-to-air-tv-boost-for-rally)
CAMS is excited to announce it has secured free-to-air coverage for the CAMS Australian Rally Championship (ARC) and FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).
7mate will screen three rounds of the ARC, while all rounds of the WRC will also be broadcast on free to air.
CAMS has again partnered with AirTime Media who will prepare 30 minute dedicated shows following selected rounds of the ARC to screen on 7mate, while the 7mate broadcast will take content from each round of the WRC....
Not live rally broadcasts - hopefully the standard of footage will still be high though - not just a discount el-cheapo service for free to air viewers.
Kind regards
Lionel

An Aussie is leading the Dakar bikes which is not as good as it sounds as he then has to "open the way" the next day making the navigation easy for others to follow, although this year they have put mystery bonus locations along the way and the 1st three to hit those get IIRC 2 secs a km, 1 sec a km and 1/2 a sec a km respectively time deducted.
Australia's Daniel Sanders takes four-minute lead in Dakar Rally motorbike category after stage three - ABC News (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-04/aussie-daniel-sanders-beats-desert-storm-take-dakar-rally-lead/101825398)

The Dakar 2024 starts in Arabia on January 5 but due to the time difference will be on SBS Ch 3/30 and SBS On Demand starting at 5pm AEST on Saturday 6 Jan for an hour each day. Possibly earlier and extended coverage via on demand streaming.

That sounds pretty much the same as the last few years, though there are random changes to the start times and duration of the show often cut to just 30 mins!

Yes, there was a change to SBS Viceland yesterday but seems to be back on SBS One this week. Rene Metge a previous 3-time winner of the Dakar died on Wednesday aged 82, his 1st win was in a Rangie. Three-time Dakar winner Metge (82 years old) dies (speedweek.com) (https://www.speedweek.com/amp/dakarauto/news/217720/Dreifacher-Dakar-Sieger-Metge-(82-Jahre)-gestorben.html?lang=en)
There seems to be a Range Rover and a Defender in the Classic category.
