Ok, my brother now needs more info about the rangies, mainly the P38 ones. Hes asking about the 95-99 models, and wants to know which year would be the best to buy. He also told me that some had to go under warranty for chasis work, is that right?
So, which year is the one you guys recommend and what is there to look out for?
Thanks
PS: I keep telling him to get a Disco instead

The 99 onwards model have the better engine management system (Bosch) which makes them perform a lot better.
I haven't heard of the chassis issue before. The air suspension & climate control can be a problem though.
They are very cheap at the moment but some repairs can be very expensive.
What are his plans for the car ?
City use or touring / off road ?
Personally, I'd choose a late Classic over a P38.

I did some research on this a while ago because i toyed with the idea of getting one and putting it on gas.
What i found out-
1)the electrics etc (as scouse said) are best and more reliable on the post 99 model
2) no one ever mentioned a chassis problem, as a rule land rover chassis are very tough
3) the 4.0L engine in the non HSE models is a better more reliable engine, however many people on here would disagree. The only problem people could offer for the 4.6L engine was the occasional issue of slipped piston liners in some engines.
4) Make sure it is checked out by an expert, when well cared for they are good but if one has problems especially electrical ones then your wallet will be forever empty.

Best year of rangie to buy would be pre 94 and post 2002
Which you might have worked out means none of the p38.:D :D
I am about to buy a 1994 Classic. Old i know but they are the best rangies of that time. Untill the model now

He wants to use it off road as well as commuting. And yes, he wants to gas convert it too. So, my feeling here is that maybe the p38's are a little too 'sensitive' and hes better of with the previous model, especially is he wants to use it off road?

The Discos would be a better choice if he's after a "newer" car though, but the RR Classic is still a surpisingly good drive (on road & off road).

i would totally agree i am going to use one as a family car and toy. And then strip it in a year to make my Tomcat. Best bit about the classic rangies is you can use a hammer and chiesel to fix it

Not long since bought a 92 classic myself ( WOMC ), great car, Fuel consumption aside, it's fantastic.
Just had it up at Stockton last weekend for the first time, breezed it, even on BFG mud terrains, although it felt like I was driving on cobblestones on the freeway, just put the cruise control on, armrests down, very comfy.
Can't beat a Classic...
