2009-2016 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4 EXPEDITION ROOF RACK – PROSPEED (https://prospeed.co.uk/collections/expedition-roof-rack/products/2009-2016-land-rover-discovery-4-expedition-roof-rack)

Looks like ProSpeed has finally released their new design, and I’m devastated. Looks like every other rack out there, and no longer following the roof contour. ****.

As always, if anyone has the old design they are looking to offload, flick me a message!

They still make the old version

No they don’t - haven’t done for well over a year now. I’ve asked… a lot. :-)

Well…that’s disappointing. The website pictures are a bit ordinary considering the $ value…
Good luck sourcing one of the nicer units…I have one, and was followed home my another D4 driver a few months back..looking for where I bought mine.

Still priced like poison i see.

Well, looks like they are going to maintain the 'old' look using an aero front, thank god.

Yeah, price is high, but then, so are the options from other manufacturers like Rhino Rack - not a huge amount in it truth be told, and if the new rack is half as good as the old, worth any extra IMO.

I've ordered one, with the aerofront a few months delayed. Time will tell if i've made the right move on this!

The new one actually looks nice, with the aero foil thingy…

I haven’t seen a pic? Lots of the ‘old’ design of course

Website has added some CGI renders….no actual “on vehicle” look…the aero foil definitely makes the Prospeed rack look better on the D4

For anyone wondering, after almost 2 years of delays, I received another email this morning advising the rack will be a bit longer yet.
This, after bold announcement that preorders would be delivered before the end of January…

Whoever decided to halt production of the old ones before the new ones were ready needs an absolute kick in the ass.

For the money, it’s crazy. Great product, but people’s life expectancies are shorter than their lead times!

Agreed, they look great but for the money they don't look that practical. At least with a Rhino or Frontrunner you can get a multitude of accessories to attach anything you can think off and for half the cost.

The new design promises to be more compatible with other brands, and the price honestly isn't as high as it sounds - bear in mind the website price is inclusive of 20% VAT, so you can take 10% off for Aus, factoring in the GST payable on arrival.

A Rhino Rack is about $2,200, so whilst the ProSpeed is a premium, it's not double. I don't mind paying more for a better product (we all appreciate quality on here - it's why we drive D3/4 right?)

I tried buying a second hand ProSpeed via facebook, but speaking with the guy, he was offered $4k, cash, to pick up that day by someone local. I struggled to justify more-than-new price for a second hand rack I would still have needed to courier to WA.

Rhino is like $1200 not $2200, there is quality then there is just a blatant overpriced rip off. Not like you can go and buy a prospeed from a shop either.

Well, here it is, the first of the new prospeed racks in Australia :-)

Silent in the wind so far - pretty happy. The future front will make it even better

What awning mounts did you use? I have the old Prospeed rack and they made a very nice (but exy) awning bracket (that folded down)

These are the rhino rack mounts - made for the batwing :-)

Looks flimsy and useless, I'd expect more for the price tag.

I've heard people say the exact same thing about Disco 3/4s...

My experience with Rhino Rack is varied - the awning is great though flimsy, however the previous roof rack was a disaster. Noisy, heavy, and rusted after the first trip away. I ended up returning it.

I can tell this rack is of a far higher quality standard, and worth the extra cash.

How about we ask questions and not be outwardly negative.

After all. It’s his cash to do as he pleases.

Once the air splitter goes on it will look nice and integrated and more than functional I’m sure.

A few floor plates will soon sort areas if needed (just like my original version)

Agree Tombie - a few more 'bits' to really make it look the part. In this, ProSpeed is absolutely at a disadvantage compared to the competition - it feels like they are under resourced for people trying to push out a wide product base. The R&D timelines are hopelessly long and inaccurate.

None of the 'XRS' stuff will fit the new design, so floor plates, jerry holders etc etc are all yet to come. For now, I have a stronger mount point for the awning, and with a heavy blanket's help a way of hauling firewood short distances at camp (boot is full of drawers), so i'm happy enough.

[QUOTE=veebs;3190463]Well, here it is, the first of the new prospeed racks in Australia :-)

Out of interest are the rail mounts a separate bracket that bolts through the rack or welded on to the frame?

I have a frontrunner rack from my previous car that I'll need to work out how to mount at some point. Frontrunner do their own rail mount which I cant use as the rack is not a standard size (cut down to 1.7m to reduce wind noise).

Nice one

There are two ‘feet’, that are bolted onto the stock rail and front point (two points each)
That then provides the mount points for the flat rack.

The whole thing is made to be as modular as possible - the sides are in pieces for example, bolted at the cross bar points. Very very tight tolerance though - only sit in when you bolt them in.
Anyway, reason for being modular is to cater for a much wider market than previous.

Good to know, might see if prospeed have the rail mounted feet as a separate item. Would be appreciated if you have a photo showing how they attach to the rack.

Finally!

Takes a bit of finessing and fiddling, and the instructions are hopeless, but it’s finally on and silent, as hoped.

Now waiting on the accessories to turn up, and I’ll be done.

It’s not cheap, but the product is solid. The lead times though, are diabolical. Hopefully they build up some stock now to deliver a bit quicker going forward.
