View Full Version : Brake Pads for my D4 - too many sizes fit?

Hi,
I need to replace front rotors and pads on my D4 to solve a runout problem, but checking online for the correct pads always presents multiple pads of different sizes and I don't know which to order. It seems my vehicle type had at least three brake systems fitted at factory: Brembo, Lucas-Girling and another. I have no idea which I have.
This is despite the vehicle selection tools online being quite specific: LR, D4 (L319), 3.0 TD, 155kW, 05/10-12/18 (mine is 2014).
For example, after selecting this vehicle above, TRW present this page with 3 different sized pads for the front: Catalogue (https://www.trwaftermarket.com/ap/catalogue/#market=au&vehicleType=P&manufacturerId=1820&modelId=9015&vehicleId=%7C800%2CAll-wheel%20Drive%20(05%2F10%20-%3E%2012%2F18%3B%20211HP%20%2F%20155KW)%7C32050%2C All-wheel%20Drive%20(09%2F09%20-%3E%2012%2F18%3B%20245HP%20%2F%20180KW)%7C56756%2C All-wheel%20Drive%20(07%2F12%20-%3E%2012%2F18%3B%20249HP%20%2F%20183KW)&variantId=800&productGroupId=402)
And the same goes for other selection tools I've tried such as Bosch.
My vehicle has the 'bigger' brakes that preclude wheels smaller than 18", so I'm fairly sure the front rotors are 360mm diameter. Repco are discounting the TRW rotors in that size (Part DF4792S) so I grabbed those and hence I want to stick with TRW brand for the new pads. But which one of the three shown to pick? Do I need to remove the current pads and measure them (I'd rather avoid that rework).
Thanks for your guidance here.

I thought the 2.7l was the 155kW version. If yours is a 3.0l, it would be a 180 or 188kW version. Then, if SD spec, you'd have the larger TRW calipers and 365mm rotors. Best to pop a wheel off and measure. TRW calipers are easily ID'd as they have "TRW" cast into the body.

3.0ltr TDV6 is 155Kw/520Nm
3.0ltr SDV6 is 183Kw/600Nm
Brake sizes are the same on the 3.0ltr TDV6 and SDV6.

Ihanks for your guidance here.
I know you want TRW, however you should consider Akebono from Rock Auto in the USA. Excellent stopping and longevity, and absolutely no dust. Many owners here are using them. P/n EUR1479 (front) and EUR1099B (rear) for yours. Around $120 depending on exchange rate.

Just had Akebono pads fitted today to the front only (so far, as rears are still good for about 30K km and sitting on the shelf waiting for me) - transport is becoming a killer plus pads have increased - mine were $380 including transport without Dazza adding any overheads.

Jeezes! Must admit its about 12 months since I bought mine. I'd heard and read on various sites that the freight component was rapidly increasing. Makes you wonder if it's still worthwhile going to the trouble to import privately. I always consider the potential hassle of a warranty claim (say, alternator) having to be made and whether it would be a smooth process. Have bought stuff from TR Spares Sydney and found them very good, so will stick with them I think.

If you’re buying from OS then you need to accept the warranty of the component isn’t a factor as the cost to return it will outweigh the savings

I had the TRW caliper and Akebono pads, running on the RDA black slotted rotors. Great combo, no dust and fantastic stopping power. Put a seal kit through the calipers and fitted new brake hoses and hard lines ascwell.

I'm also an Akebono advocate. When we first got our SDV6 D4, it had genuine LR pads and discs and I was constantly cleaning the rims. The stopping effort was okay with the originals but the front discs had worn to the point of replacement. I'd heard of these Akebono pads and so with a fresh set of DBA discs on the front, both the front and rear pads were replaced with Akebono's from Rockauto (yep was over 12 mths ago before the freight costs went through the roof). The lack of dust is amazing and the stopping power/effort is better than the genuine (most likely due to the worn nature of the genuine?).
I will still pursue Akebono pads when the time comes for replacements (regardless of the expense) unless someone can prove the dust issue is not there for other manufacturers.

Thanks for the replies!
I managed to measure the dimensions of the existing pads and on that basis have ordered TRW GDB1898 for the front and TRW GDB1632 for the rears. $70 per set delivered. If they don't fit I'll let y'all know!
I looked at Rockauto but dismissed them as they only show an LR4 engine with spark plugs... I have found that Rockauto show incorrect parts with every one of the 4 cars I work on. Gross examples: a 16" wheel that will not fit over brakes; auto transmission parts for a car that was never made with an auto ...etc.

Rockauto is great, just do your research beforehand and order what you know things to be. Never had an issue but I order what I know, not what they tell me

PM your VIN to me and I check the part nos. JLR say and you can cross reference them.

Same story with me, I have purchased a few things off Rockauto BUT only when I know they're correct. The D4 was only released with the petty V8 in the states (to my knowledge) but there is a lot of overlap with our D4s here. Same with my MX5 here and the equivalent Miata over there. Research is key before ordering.

I'm currently running GDB1898DTE and the equivalent rear. These are the ceramic formulation and have been brilliant braking and almost no dust.
Am currently looking for same for the next change but haven't found a supplier. Got the priors from Advanced Factors but they have not stocked for a long time.
Probably will order Akebono from Rockauto. Just look for their LR4 V8 parts in their catalog.

Yep, we have the Akebonos front and rear, ordered from RockAuto
No change to brake feel (at least, that I have noticed) though they tend to squeal when reversing. Haven't been able to solve that one just yet...

Check that they are installed the right way around, i remember theses pads only have one relief chamfer on them, and this chamfer on the face of the pad should be facing towards the direction of normal rotation IIRC. Idea being that when braking any debris between rotor and pad can fall away. If the other way, you can drag debris into the pad-rotor interface especially on sand and they can squeal. My D4 is gone so I can't check for you...
