We bought a 60ltr Engel way back 22 years ago for $1485 (I've still got the receipt) and have just sold it for 600 bucks. Run well on 24v and 12v, never any problems apart from when I loaded it with red hot beer on a red hot day in SA once.... very little marking on the outside as it always had a cover and a bloke nearly fell over himself to come around my place at 07:30 one morning to buy it. :)
So overall it cost us about 75c a week which to me is very good value.
I know there's plenty of alternative fridges on the market these days but the new replacement Engel at 1600 bucks is still sitting in my "computer room" waiting to be put in the car, but did a good job keeping all the masses of Xmas tucker the Cook bought good and cold. :)

Sold our 29L, 37yr old Engle for $400 12 months ago,as the compressor was that noisy it was keeping us awake at night.
Put it in Gumtree,it was gone the next day.Lid didnt seal very well either as it was sat on more than once or twice, and Mrs Scarry gave it a respray a few years ago to hide the rusty bits.
I had the original manual but not the receipt as it was a present from my parents.
The new 35L Bushman is silent, and has interchangeable lids which give more room,so more versatile than the old Engle.
I nearly bought the model without the different sized lids, but am now glad i didnt.

Ours stays in the car all the time,i recon the old one probably did well over 1M Km in the back of numerous vehicles, including the work vans at times.

So if this 22 yo Engel is so great why did you sell it?

My 14 yo $495 65l ebay fridge is still going well and could probably sell it for $300 but as it works well there is no need to sell.

I see this so often - why do people write "recon" instead of adding one more letter and spell it correctly as "reckon". It really irritates me.

This one's been through a few wars. Still great.

Probably just laziness, strange the spell check didn’t pick it up.

strange the spell check didn’t pick it up.

Spell checkers are largely built by US companies... The US is home to the Recon Marines. Well, it could be one reason[bigwhistle]

EDIT: Just looked. The American dictionary that comes with my OS describes it thus:

Noun: short for reconnaissance (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/r:m_en_gbus0851660:com.apple.dictionary.ODE:reconn aissance).

So, that's ok then.... Abbreviations are whole words....

Because I wanted a new fridge that's why. :) No really we wanted to get a new one because apparently they draw less power and as we enjoy being away from van parks etc that's important. I don't carry a massive battery bank or gen set like many do so anyway as we'd got good service from it decided to go that way again. Plus it fits our new cover perfectly..... :)

Yes I recently put my ALDI current draw meter across my 2000 model on 240 volts and found that it drew 5amps ( equivalent at 12v ) which is 25% more than advertised. I cannot now remember how many watts that was at 240 but about 60 watts .

With refrigeration it depends at what conditions it is rated at.

Ambient temperatures, evaporator temperatures, suction and high side system pressures, make a huge difference to current draw.
No doubt the manufacturers rated current is at perfect conditions, low ambients, and low evaporator temperatures.

You mean like a bathroom extractor fan. They are tested to confirm they meet the required air flow standard on a bench. If you then test when it has been fitted most of those at the cheaper end of the market move less than half the required air flow. But they meet the legal standard as they pass the test

Oh no, FanGate!

Manufacturers build things to pass tests. The real world is different, so tests should reflect real world conditions. VW paid $Billions punitively because they don't.

I bought a Primus 40l fridge about 10 years ago when it was on special for about $400.
It still works perfectly, it has No rust (Stainless steel case) it averages about 3.5a an hour at -2C and it is almost silent.
Thats "Value for money" [thumbsupbig][biggrin]

I have always wondered how the manufacturers CO2/Km rating for a 2.2/2.4L Puma Deefer,is more than a V8 4.5L 200 series.....[bighmmm]

Someone is fudging something somewhere.
