View Full Version : V8 fuel pump dying?

Hi fellas,
I went to start the V8 disco yesterday and it fired and immediately died, had another go and same again. Tried again, this time it cranked a long time with no start. Left it a bit and tried again pushing the throttle pedal and it started. Drove fine. It's done the same again today. This time however on the first non start I tested for spark, that's fine. I got my wife to crank it & sprayed starter fluid and it fired. As I had the air filter cover off I sprayed the maf to clean it and checked the air filter. The car fired with a bit of throttle encouragement. The fuel pump is old, like 5 years old, and the truck isn't getting as much use as it use too.

What's annoying is that I'm going away this Friday for 4 days and I'm taking the v8. Would the fuel pump be the prime suspect? If so, is it WFX101060 of WFX101070 as both are listed for the v8?

James, if the D2 V8 pump is the same as the D1 V8, a Commodore pump is the same but half the price from Repco. All you need to do is change the electrical connections.

Hi Ian, thanks for the info. I looked into it, but the part numbers and online pictures look different, which is a pity as a new pump locally, if they had one, would be $1630.00. Or just under a 1/3 of the price of my truck [bigsad]

I'll be ordering one from overseas but in the meantime a mate has offered me a loan of a pump as a back up out of his crashed disco.

Hi guys

just writing to update this as the vehicle died at 5pm the day before we were to set off on holiday which is a bit stressful because now I would need to pack 4 adults, 1 Labrador and bags of stuff into the TD5. However something didn't feel right, so even after trying the loan fuel pump (which was known to be working) the truck still woudn't start. Thinking about it a bit more I wired the fuel pump directly and it worked, removed the relay and wired it directly and it still worked so with the DMM in hand I found the fault to be the connection from the ecu (Term86) to the relay within the main fuse box. I removed the fuse box, dismantled it and found corrision on the terminals so swapped it with a spare low Km fuse box I had and voila, the beast hasn't missed a beat since.
