Has anyone here built their own rear wheel carrier ? , i think it will be my next project as i can see getting the deflated spare out from under the vehicle a PITA.
I have a rough design in mind and some of the components already.

Do you have your own machine shop?

I put it inside as I didn't want to have to move spare wheel every time I open the back, which is multiple times a day.

I have recently bought a dual cab 4x4 and familiarising myself with tyre change immediately ****canned the underbody spare location. What a total pain in the arse it is to lower the spare and get it out, not considering one side of the vehicle will be 100mm lower and you're scrabbling around in rocks and dirt.My previous vehicle was Ranger trayback, same thing so put it up in the tray.
So now I'm trying to work out best way with tub body .

4x4 show is on in a few weeks so I'll see what the industry proposes.

DYI is definitely on the cards though.

Out of curiosity, how many times have you needed to change tyres?

In 30 years of driving, I’ve had to change one (unplanned) 6 times.

For the lack of convenience I wouldn’t bother with the spend. Unless you want to use the space for a tank.

I’ve changed mine a few times on the side of the road in sand and mud. It wasn’t an issue. The most annoying bit was removing stuff from the rear to get to the screw to drop it, which can be planned against. I too wouldn’t bother, but [emoji2369], good luck [emoji106]

I did some homework to do this task, I found this link had some positive options:

I'd be interested in one that also provided for towing when fitted, and operated off the towball assembly, not the stub axle on the side design (I've seen a few pics from the good old USA, but nothing from here).

The design would require a gas strut for dropping the wheel to access the rear door, and need to be a fairly light frame as it would be in competition for the tow hitch total carrying capacity. I have a 350 kgm tow hitch version and usually work on a towball load of 5-6% or 180 kgm for the van. This leaves me with about the same weight for wheel and holder, although ideally a bit lower weight would be nice and give me a little leeway on the total weight on the ball.

Alternatively I could just carry my 2nd spare in a cage on the roof.

I wouldn't trust anything that fitted like that, easier to just put your spare on the van.

Just found this one which is in WA Tilting Spare Wheel Carrier | GEN3 – Mirack Products (https://mirack.com.au/product/xt-tilting-rear-wheel-carrier/)

Only problem is the extended hitch is only good for towing 2T.
