Novel. I can't help thinking its attempting to compensate for inadequate maintenance though.

Not always!
Sometimes they can come from the factory defectively fitted. New owner would be none the wiser, and expect that they'd be correctly fitted.

A few years back, I was doing some casual work for SES, and one of my jobs was to get bits and pieces from central depot out to the rural depots.
One time I had a trailer to deliver to Wangaratta.

I'm a smoker, so had to pull up for a quick stop, and as habits have been formed doing this I always check around my vehicle for signs of issues.
So whilst having this break, I could smell the distinct odor of hot grease, but no obvious spot where it was coming from.
By chance I checked the heat of each trailer wheels/tyres, and sure enough one was super hot to touch. Whilst they all had a bit of heat(say 60ish degrees) and you leave your hand on one for a few sec ... one was so tightly wound up, it was oven hot.
It wasn't obvious, except when checked for feel.
I called SES HQ and told them of the issue, and explained that I reckon the bearing was over tightened(what other reason for a brand spanking new trailer) .. they said just continue on and let the depot up there know.

Still a few hundred klms to get there, and as I suspected would happen all the grease started to spew out of bearing and onto brand new white wheel! [biggrin]
I sat on 90k/h all the way there.

Idea is great, the app won't work.. Be like them cheap tpms systems, if it was integrated to tpms they would be millionaires.

I find that after 50ks at full speed..I know exactly what they'll be like for the next year.. They don't get tighter, I re pack every winter. It's just easy
