Gday All,

Looking at moving forward from the D3 which has served us well but the ongoing costs plus wanting to start travelling more my mindset is to upgrade now and it should serve us for the next phase. Im looking at a TDV6 but this is based purely on my right or wrong assumption that the TDV6 seems less prone to failure, but im sure this is a very debateable view to have.

So my question is , I have an extensive list of spares for the D3 ranging from wheel speed sensers to starter motor, new dunlop compressor, brand new alternator , plus many other bits and bobs.. so is the later TDV6 in the 2016 model basically the same engine.. im pretty sue the D4 has a different more powerful alternator .. but are most of the other parts the same.?

Thanks and cheers Bulletman

Sorry mate - all the diesels in the D4s from about 2012 onward are the 3.0L. TDV6 is just the tune level now, and a 2016 TDV6 can be turned into an SDV6 using only a computer (no hardware change at all)

So is that in reference to my assumption about the lower tune tdv6 being less prone to failure ? Or.. that nothing will fit the newer model..

The 2.7 is less prone to failure or failure to proceed than the 3.0L variants (mostly), none of your spares will fit a D4.
The saving grace of the 2.7 is the plentiful supply of replacement motors if it ever goes sump up.

Yes, I was unclear - I meant the newer model was unlikely to take too many parts from the 2.7L. For example, the alternator is 'smart' in the 3.0 with a different sized drive belt. I can't really speak to the other parts you may have, though I dare say there will be no shortage of people willing to purchase from you?

On the question of being prone to failures, there is another recent thread that degenerated into that very topic, with (in my opinion) the only conclusion being there is no conclusion... :)

The OP is talking 2016,so that would be the lower tune 3.0L

I think the assumption is lower power, due to different tune, less stress therefore less chance of engine dramas?

That is if they both run same crank, bearing setup, etc.

Yes D4 2.7L appears to be the best of all of them, but MY12 was the end of the run,and there are not many around, getting pretty old as well.

When you look at the advertisement you have 2 seperate discriptions .. 3.0 Tdv6 and 3.0 Sdv6 so i assumed that the tdv6 was the lower kw tune .

Not necessarily total failure but manifolds etc affects all 3.0L, also not talking about D4 2.7, just saying in general the 2.7 is a much cheaper repair.

Correct,and both 8 speed from MY13.

If it is a diesel and has a shift lever it’s a 6 speed and 2.7D is the general rule. Don’t think 3.0 ever was mated to ZF6?

Definitely was. 2010 to 2012? All 6spd, no matter what engine.

Just look for a V8 and pay a little more for fuel but have a hugely more reliable vehicle and heaps cheaper to maintain, put a long rang tank in it and enjoy the exhaust note

I didnt know they continued to V8 into the D4.. now its looking like none of my spares will suit the D4 might be time to look outside the LR stable..

Only early days but there are certainly plenty of choices when you start looking at the prices of the 2015/2016 D4

Or the supercharged V6!!!!

I did see 1 SCV6 advertised for sale.

Im planning on using the vehicle for towing our van as well , and with my travels with work once you are out of the main city areas the fuel cost between deisel and petrol are identical or within a few cents..

My main thought with continuing with a D4 is that i have learnt plenty during my D3 ownership and would fit my LR tank , rear wheel carrier, roof rack , bullbar etc to the new D4.
