View Full Version : Need Help - Locking Wheel Nut Type Identification

G'Day folks
I've misplaced the lock nut adapter for my locking wheel nuts.
Stoopid noobie mistake, I know.
So now I need to somehow identify which lock nut pattern I have so that I can order a new adapter from LRDirect.
Several pics attached. Would any of you good folk know how I might match up the correct adapter for these?

Just thought I’d update the thread with the outcome of this little saga.
So in the end I used a 25mm 1/2” drive 12-point long socket to monster the locking nuts off. Replaced now with standard black wheel nuts. I used a heavy mash hammer to force the socket over the locking wheel nut. And a long 1/2” drive extension bar to undo the lock nuts.

Things I tried:
- using some internet-based detective work, I initially deduced that mine was a type-J key. What I didn’t understand at the time was that there are 2 different type-j’s. The original Stealth wheel package on my L405 came with an OEM version of the commercially available lock nuts from McGard.
The type-j key that I ordered from LRDirect was the wrong one, of course. The part number that I got from LRCat was not the right one for my lock nuts. I found the correct part number on LRCat at a second look. My mistake.
- enquiring directly with McGard delivered a response of “you should talk to your local dealer.” There are other reasons that I won’t go into in this thread that I didn’t want to do that.
- I ordered a complete set of keys from eBay that match the keys that go with the Stealth wheels. It took a while for these to ship from the UK to AU, but when they finally got here I was momentarily buoyed by the fact the set did indeed have a matching key for my lock nuts. However…poor quality keys and mildly damaged lock nuts (you can see the damage in the pics above) actually ended up damaging the lock nuts further and damaging the key itself without successfully removing any of the locking nuts. If you’re looking on eBay, these keys come in a blue case. If your lock nuts are at all damaged, most likely by tire fitters or mechanics using a rattle-gun with the key, you can forget using these cheap keys. You won’t get far.
- I was in communication with another seller on eBay who confirmed from pics that my lock nuts were definitely type-J, but he actually locked me from purchasing the corresponding key from him due to the damaged lock nuts. Fair play from him in hindsight. He didn’t want the hassle of a potential return and an unhappy customer.
- another key I purchased from eBay arrived the other day. Should have fit mine. Same pattern. Type-J. But just didn’t fit.

So I ended up buying 24, 25, and 26mm 12-point sockets from Sydney Tools because I wasn’t 100% sure which one would be a tight fit. The 25mm was perfect after being persuaded with a mash hammer. And then it was simple from there.
I got the black wheel nuts from 4wd industries. I also got a new set of genuine lock nuts, with key, in a nice little black box for when I put my 22-inch Stealth wheels back.
Not sure if anyone picked up on it, but I’m running my 20-inch chipped second hand rims that I use for off-road with Nitto Ridge Grapplers in the pics above.

**Tip: Don’t lose your locking wheel nut key.
