I’m back on the Rangie and the fuel pump has gone to god - It’s an internal unit fitted in an LRA long range tank. Vehicle is an early 86 model so last of the carby engined units back in the day but now runs a 3.9 EFI - so guess what - there’s no access cover in the back to get to the fuel pump. I’m assuming it’s in the same location as the later EFI vehicles that do have an access hatch in the rear boot area so I’m wondering if someone has some dimensions or pics so I’m not guessing when I take the grinder to the floor… [emoji56]

TIA - Gavin.

You could leave the pump in and fit a Bosch external pump ex dunnydore ?

Good thought but I’m not sure the pickup and hose in there is any good so I need that out regardless to have a look unfortunately.

Found this from a video - must be a late 80's as it is EFI but without the cover so he's pulled the whole floor - I haven't even looked if that's possible on mine but the back is already stripped out so it could be an option - I'll have a look tonight.

Not sure the floor removal is as easy as all that if a D1 is anything to go by. Probably easier err to drop the tank.....

I'd rather cut the entire body off the car than drop the tank [bigwhistle]

It was an absolute PITA getting it in there years ago and now everything is dirty and rusted - it won't be coming out while I still own it.

I'm thinking I'll cut an oversize chunk out of the floor and just weld it back in - with a decent cover built in the correct spot when it all goes back together.

I'll bet..
With the pic you have and that vid you should be able to work out a rough location... assuming the long range tank used the same spot[bigwhistle]

I am definitely assuming it is in the same location - but I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Given it was built as a direct replacement for 88 onward RRC’s I would imagine it is….

In a 91 which had a plastic tank the long range tank location was to the front of the standard "porthole" about by the size of the pump hole radius.
I cut a piece out of the floor and just placed a couple of alloy strips on the bit cut out and screwed it to the floor again.

Your post has brought back memories, I had the pipe of the fuel pump on my 88RR crack on the Tanami Track and had to drop the tank out to repair it. If you think it's a difficult job at home in the workshop.....
Highly recommend installing a commodore pump in a more convenient location.
