It's a bit hard to tell what they're basing the ratings on other than recalls and someone else's "assessment". I had a Subaru Forester - generally considered a very reliable car - that had three recalls on it, one to re-fit a part that was frequently installed incorrectly after the second recall. Apart from the recalls it never missed a beat. In the current climate post-Firestone I would imagine that manufacturers recall almost anything. I had a recall on a 10 year old Subaru DL - because some seatbelt clips got stiff. Mine were fine.

But when it comes to reliability, I have always considered reliability to fall into two categories - 1) nothing goes wrong and 2) nothing goes wrong I can't fix. My Land Rovers certainly don't meet definition 1, but they do meet definition 2.

I'd guess, though, that some of the D3 owners on the forum might be able to comment on the recalls.

I expect my Series III to be unreliable - it's old. I've owned old, unreliable cars before - things just wear out no matter how good the design and construction is. But what is there to go wrong with a new Range Rover? Are they really failing to procede or is it that the trim isn't exactly alligned? And if it's recalls - good grief, the Americans have their space program which, from beginning to end, could have done with a recall or two.

I love conspiracy theories so here's my take on this for what it's worth. The Ford owned Land Rover is a setup by Ford to distract everyone from the fact that many Ford US products are a bit how's ya father. Same with Lincoln, another Ford brand. - keeps the gullibles away from the actual issue - that some Ford items like the Explorer is a major worry....(I'm not anti Ford as I have and have had many of their locally made sedans which seem to work quite well). No recalls here, Ive had the D3 for 9 mths now, driven on/offroad and no probs in general, only thing was in first cuppla weeks had a faulty airbag and they replaced it. that was it,

Well my old Explorer didn't choke me dust or try to wet my feet, like my D2 did ! after a trip to the Kimberleys and Gulf

Most of the recalls only affected the V6 petrol. I think one was for a tank problem. The diesel doesn't make it to the US.
