View Full Version : Confusion about identifying 6sp and 8sp gearboxes.

I'm am getting very confused!
My search for a replacement Disco is going to be a D4 with the 8 speed tranny.
I know carsales is a bit ropey on descriptions, but after a few phone calls to sellers, it is not just carsales who are confused.
I thought the 6 speed box could be identified by the gear lever, and not the rotary selector, but 2 people I've called have told me they have an 8 speed box with a gear lever.
Is that likely????
When I ask if the engine is the 2.7 or 3.0, I get more confusion from sellers.
Is the definitive identification of an 8 speed box the rotary selector?? And from that, then the engine connected to the box would be a 3.0 model and not a 2.7????
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I want to get it right when I jump for a replacement.
I've attached some photos so show why I'm confused.
The descriptions I've put on the photos are from the Carsales descriptions.

The 8 speed box ONLY came with the rotary selector, and the 6 speed ONLY came with the stick. It is absolutely the definitive way to confirm via a photo.
The car only shows 'D' when in normal drive mode, so no visual feedback on the gear you're in - all confirming my suspicion that most people have NFI what they are driving :)
Further, the 8 speed box was only ever available with the 3.0L Diesel. So, if the picture has a rotary selector, it will have 8 gears, and a 3.0L diesel (unless it's a petrol variant, which is much rarer and hopefully the current owner is aware which fuel type they have been using...)
It IS possible to retrofit an 8 speed into an earlier 6 speed car, however even then, the rotary knob needs to be retrofitted too. I'd suspect this is a pretty rare case.

I found the same issues when I was searching for my D4, some people have no clue and get really shirty when you point out they are wrong, I am sure some know the facts and intentionally lie to get a sale and increase prices
As above, rotary dial is 8 speed, stick is 6, 8 speed is 3l

You can also find early D4’s with the 2.7 which are falsely advertised as being a 3.0.

Being pedantic, the MY10 3.0 was a TDV6 whereas the MY10 2.7 was just a 2.7.

But to confuse everyone more who’s new to this, the TDV6 3.0L in 2010 is the higher power configuration as then to be known later as the SDV6 variant. Clear as mud!

From MY13,2.7 was dropped,and low output TDV6 appeared,3.0L,and 8 speed.

Also when searching for a later D4 in car sales. Don't select "Discovery 4" as your search vehicle. Just search Discovery and the later model D4's will be there with the D5's etc. Nor sure why, but Carsales only includes D4's up until the the updated model in the D4 category.

You can, however, filter using the 'series 4' in car sales, to return only D4s from 2013 or so on.

To add more sediment to the water, when you get to touch the beast, have a good look at the identification code low left windscreen , to wit,
SAL=LR UK
LA=D4
A=standard
A=4 door
F=3.0 not DPF Hi power
5=8 sp auto
G= 2016
A = Solihull
123456= VIN

.....except in the case of a 2014 (maybe other years as well) XKR Jaguar!
A mate just bought one in Sydney and showed it to me. I saw the rotary dial and pronounced that it had the 8 speed auto. He said it was 6 speeds.
We almost got into a punch up (not really) until he lit up the ignition and showed me the gearchange display on the dash.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Speeds.
We learn something every day.

But we’re talking about Discovery’s, not Jags, or any other vehicle that comes with a ZF transmission. The 6HP28 six speed box was designed for manual selection or automatic, but was only supplied in manual form in a Discovery until they went to the 8HP box.

Thanks, am well aware of that; just thought people may be interested to know that the six speeder had a rotary dial in one application.

Probably because Landrover changed the naming at that point - it became just the Discovery.
And on Carsales you search for D4 plus Discovery/Series 4 to get the MY15 and MY16.5 cars.

And my mate has a T bar shifter on an 8spd in his supercharged 5.0 F-Type Jag.

But the MY11 2.7 is badged as TDV6 and I assume that the 3.0 must have changed to SDV6.

Eventually, the 3.0 high output was rebadged SDV6. Before that, it was 3.0 TDV6.
TDV6 was always the lower output version of the V6 Discovery - be that by way of a 2.7L engine, or the lower tune 3.0

Attached is something posted a number of years ago by Bytemark.
2015 & 2016 are the same specs as 2013 & 2014.
Discovery 4 2012 MY 12 is 6 speed
Discovery 4 2012 MY 13 is 8 speed
When advertising on Carsales if you have one version of the 2012 and you choose the other when advertising the vehicle it will cause the confusion that I think this thread relates to.

Makes me wonder how they go about the naming, as to me the other way around would make more sense as in, TDV6 Twin-turbo Diesel V6 and Single-turbo Diesel V6.

Sequential?? Serious?? Swiss?? Siamese??
I'm with you! The names are always a let down. I think discovery means a journey into your wallet you never knew possible?

Right up until the crank decides it should really be a V4 instead of a V6.[bigrolf]
