I don't lift the bonnet very often so I was surprised last time I opened it to see this hole in the top of the engine cover.

Can somebody tell me what it is for pls.

Is it OK to run the engine without whatever goes in it ?

Nothing. It is just part of the design. It serves no purpose on the Puma engine. Maybe in some Ford applications but not in the Puma engine.

It houses a diesel particulate filter which, as Spud said, LR did not use. Maybe put your foil-wrapped spud in there on your next trip.

Oldie, pix are better than PDF files for this sort of question. A PDF file has to be downloaded then opened to be viewed.

With a pic, you can insert it with the buttons above the message area and it can be viewed directly.

I didn’t bother with your pic as I’m reading on my phone so downloading a PDF and viewing it is a pain in the proverbial.

The same engine in a ford transit has a centrifugal oil filter much the same as the old TD5 engine had.
