Hi All,

Mates brother has a D3 (2.7 TDV6) that has started using a lot of coolant and getting a tad hot. It is still running, doesn't appear to have any oil in the coolant but reports a sweet exhaust smell. He's 1.5 hrs (Mundurah) drive south of Perth, WA. Local mechanic says his engine is stuffed and it's in excess of $10K to replace.

Anybody know of a good LR mechanic in that neck of the woods that he could get a second opinion from?

Cheers,

Kev.

I'd be checking the EGR coolers before jumping to conclusions. Can't recommend a mechanic though, sorry.

x2 on checking the EGR coolers. Not sure there are any LR indies down that way. Closest I know of is RoverTech

Surely the mech can use a sniffer and check for exhaust gases in the coolant before condemning the engine, i'd be bypassing the egr coolers and see how it goes.

I would start at the front, eg, check radiator, even to the extent of a new one

Definitely more less costly steps before replacing the motor, some people.....

Outback Discovery from YouTube lives down that way. Very capable having swapped a 2.7 and up for projects between swings I believe

(Valuable content for YouTube)

Definitely the 2nd best WA YouTuber lol

I live in Mandurah. There is a well respected mech operating just down the road Peel Auto,1/41 Gordon Road ph 95833939 and another unknown at Euro King Auto,4Quarry Way 95816588.
Give me a PM, sure we can bypass the cooler if it's the cause.

Thanks very much mate, that's golden information.

Also, thank you to the other guys that have responded.

Gav's brother hasn't named the original "let's replace the engine guy", but sought a second opinion. This mechanic conducted a pressure test, I'm assuming that was the cooling system and identified the problem as being the water pump, as it leaked a lot under pressure. That's a much cheaper fix and hopefully the job will be done.

I'll definately pass on the numbers you have supplied and will reach out if the EGR turns out to be the problem.

Cheers,

Kev.

That would be Rovertech in Bentley or Dazza[Aztech] in Rivervale.
If you can get it there....60kms?

I'm also going to recommend Rovertech as the only other indy Land Rover repairer (I simply dont know the others).

As for the price if it is the engine, I wouldn't complain about a $10K bill.

LOL ... what is it with spell check on this site, or is it something the MS smarty pants did during one of their frequent updates to my PC? I'm one of those folks that can pick up a spelling mistake a mile a way .... as long as somebody else wrote it! But I'm hopeless at picking up my own. [bighmmm]

Work wise, I often have to use templates created by editors that turn off spell check .... just because. They won't turn off the MS 'feature' that allows a word document to continually adopt different versions of the same style, to the point where the document is unusable and then crashes .... same with inefficient use of track changes .... same result usually on really large documents .... which wastes hours of engineers and project managers time ....but NO ... they will turn spell check off ... which is possibly the most useful tool most of the people I work with need ...:bat:

Anyway ... rant over .... how do I turn spell check on? :-) And I don't mean on MSWord ... I know how to do that ;-)

Wouldn't they use a second hand Ford Explorer engine ... or are they super expensive too?

Water pump is a much cheaper result by any measure :-)

I will recommend you and Rovertech to Gav, to pass on to his brother for future reference though.

Cheers,

Kev.

Exploder?……I thought that was already in his D4
