View Full Version : Amber suspension fault / GAP IID

I've been getting an intermittent amber suspension fault over the last fortnight - what would a GAP IID actually tell you from the internal fault code?
The recent issues I had with my intercooler weren't specifically picked up by my independent's analysis tools, whatever ones they use - so will a GAP IID actually narrow down what the issue might be or is all it does is just display the generic LR fault code?

There are no real "generic LR fault codes". Each code identifies a specific issue or behaviour and that starts the diagnosis process.
I count 90 DTCs listed for suspension the service manual. 10 or so of those are "lost communication or electronic issue" the rest are plausibility or fault. So a DTC is a pretty good leg up on localizing the issue.

OK, in any case I'll have to book it in for a service to sort out what's going on. I get that because it's at 7 years / 100,000 kms there's a few service items like the belts to be fixed, but it is turning into a money pit at the moment.

Frankly if you've made it this far and it's only just turning into a money pit I reckon you've done well and have some catching up to do!

Mine is 9 years (MY14) and coming up to 300,000km.
Had all of the usual things go over that time. I suppose I'll be up for my 3rd LCA change soon.... Still loving it though.

I was getting the amber faults for my suspension on and off for around 6 weeks, the fault was along the lines of “not holding gallery pressure “ or something similar. After searching this forum I ordered the oring rebuild kit for the control blocks and fitted them, went out for a test drive and the fault reappeared and by the time I got home I could hear my front air strut was leaking. I’ve since replaced the front struts ( the ride is amazing) and have the rear struts sitting here to do.

192,000km, 12 years old.
Alternator,
front LCA bushes at 80k,
Full suspension refurb at 190k
New radiator same time
Where is this money pit?

Good to hear. Where did you buy struts? BWI brand?

Well, in the last 18 months there's been new front LCAs and a blown intercooler, and the current issue is probaly the compressor. Plus the three belts done, the transmission done and 6 new tyres. That adds up to a fair bit of money. I've owned a range of cars here and OS and with most of them - like our Mazda people mover and various Hondas - there's been nothing but general services and consumables required.
The independents I use said that they're seeing quite a few late model D4s with cracked manifolds and that's what it was feared the intercooler was. Which is why I'm thinking of selling it.

Lets keep it real, a money pit?
New tires, all cars, new suspension, most 4wds get that just after driving out of the show room then every 80-100,000 km after that, new alternators, all cars have them and they all wear out, turbo and associated bits are common to all modern diesels.
The only additional bits that go on a modern LR are manifolds and compressors, the rest is not worth thinking about because you could own a Toyota and pay the same bits and have a car not as nice to drive[bigwhistle]

Personally i think the OP is entitled to call it what he likes... and a 2014 D4 needing gearbox work and a new intercooler would fall into the not happy mood in my house as well.. After just spending $10k on my D3 to overhaul the gearbox and replace the front diff with only 210,000ks on the clock im feeling much the same..
To the OP , do you have a gap tool that has read the codes.. OR was it more a question of " if you had a gap tool ". On the D3 some of the basic suspension faults would show up on the message centre.. ie suspension slow to rise..
Being an amber light it could be many things but you could start by doing a simple test like removing the 20A suspension fuse under the bonnet and let the car sit overnight , this will stop the car from self levelling . You may be able to pin point if its a airbag leak on 1 corner or if its front or rear.
Im not sure about that year D4 but the D3 had the hitachi compressor and the cap on those would sometimes crack between the air fittings and cause issues..
A code reader would certainly help in all cases thats for sure.
Hopefully its a simple fix .

I'm surprised about the gearbox but unless i missed it i don't see a mention of it needing replacement or just a service ?

I read post #9 and see he has had a blown intercooler and mentions the transmission being done... i just had mine done at a cost of $8k.. but as you say it could just be a service... regardless.. instead of trying to offer some help or insight offence seemed to be taken at the use of the word money pit instead of the OP question.
The main reason i decided to spend the $$ on my D3 is all i could see if i did upgrade to a D4 was me actually just buying a money pit with all the items i could see would be needed in the future after purchase.

And its usually a 10k plus price tag and often 20k.

That is way off the mark for a GVM upgrade and a towbar and wiring harness.
It is done for a reason, not because it has to be done to every vehicle.
Many run the stock suspension, keep an eye on the weights,as with any vehicle, and have no worries.

Well, in the last 18 months there's been new front LCAs (consumable) and a blown intercooler, and the current issue is probaly the compressor. Plus the three belts done (service = consumable), the transmission done (service = consumable) and 6 new tyres (definitely a consumable). That adds up to a fair bit of money. Sure it adds up to a bit of money, its major service time...
Comparing Mazda and Hondas is not apples for apples.. People movers and hondas dont tow, dont go into dusty offroad conditions, and dont weigh 3 tonnes... and are very simplistic beasts in all manner of engineering and design.
They dont ride like an air sprung vehicle for example... but wait until a window switch etc goes - you think LR are expensive... Been there with Mazda in the past.
I feel for anyone taking the hip pocket hit at 100k / 7 years - its never nice.. however, it is the nature of operating any vehicle.

Not really, a guy at work paid nearly 20K on his new 200 loser just 3 years ago.

Yes, it was the 7 year/100,000 km service - the ZF gearbox is probably the most reliable major item in the car.

The latter .... I was thinking of getting a GAP tool but was wondering - being fairly non-mechancial - how much it would assist me.
