View Full Version : Off road settings especially corrugated roads

Well we are about to head off on our big trip to WA and Ningaloo, I’ve done a lot of off road driving with my 3 Nissan Patrols and way too many klms on corrugated roads, but nothing so far with our 2011 4.4TDV8 Patrol was simple hi and Low range were the only options and no adjustments with my ARB suspension, on corrugated roads towing my 2.5t caravan is it best to travel in normal ride height, DSC on or off, in the gravel terrain setting? So many to choose from any experience with this will be greatly appreciated, I know about the DSC for sand might even make a little stick on sign for dash the same as a wife recently did for her husband because he kept forgetting and getting stuck, I’m not a novice at off road situations my list of trips and tracks is extensive Australia wide but never in a 4wd with so many gadgets 😂

With our old D4,which is pretty similar,i just left it in normal road mode,and DSC on,no issues.

Leave in normal ride height, it will drop down at 50Km/hr,i presume you will be going faster anyway.Extra height shouldn't be needed anyway,i would think?

Dont overthink it.

Reducing tyre pressures is important,with bad corrugations.

Again, D4 here, but pretty much same same.

Yes, leave DSC on. It keeps it all safe and won't let the car slide out on a corner.

Grass/gravel/snow - if it's really loose and slippery, yes, otherwise normal mode is just fine.

And in case you didn't know, the EPB can act as an emergency braking system. If the driver passes out, the passenger can simply lift and hold the EPB switch and the car will do the rest, using ABS, engine braking, etc. It will come to a halt without having to touch anything except the switch. Fun to practice with at 80kph on gravel!

Thanks Redtail will be a bit of a learning curve, skills I have but just got to learn what’s best for car, my 03’ 4.2 Patrol sat nicely at 80 klms on corrugated roads you’ve just got to find that sweet spot, mind you haven’t towed a caravan on those roads yet we just had a camper trailer back then, done Cape York twice, Gibb river road up to Cape Leveque and down the Tanami desert track, spent 20yrs going to Fraser Island for holidays, living in Victoria now so I miss the sand, can’t wait to get to Ningaloo

The only problem, if you could call it that, is that your L322's air suspension will soak up the bumps a lot better than your Patrol did. Just be mindful that you may tend to drive a bit faster for the conditions than you normally would.

A wize, old transport operator once told me, if you make the driver too comfortable, they forget how rough the ride is for the freight. The same could apply to caravans.
