Hi,
Still fairly new to Aulro,
Recently bought a D2 TD5 ,
Have heard about various things to monitor Engine temperature, ( as in dash Gauge quite poor )
as well as for Auto Transmission, ( as every thing I read says these transmissions especially susceptible to high temps).
I've seen a thing called an Engine Guard, a very simple gadget that sits on dash and has two probes that typically you'd attach to your engine block
(near a thrmostat) and the other to transmission cooling pipe outlet.
Also heard of thing ( called a UltraGauge) to plug into the diagnostics (ODBC) port and can read just aout everything in the vehicle computer , approx $400.
Does anyone know of any other systems, they'd recommend?
Apart from engine and Transmission fluid outlet temp, the other thing I'd like to monitor is Exhaust Gas (before Turbo),
Any other suggestions as to what I should also monitor?
Regards

Your bank account? :)
The engine guard is a quality piece of equipment, I use one to monitor coolant and auto temp.
The ultragauge won't work at all on a TD5.
I also monitor EGT but couldn't give you the brand name without going for a look, SAAS gauges seem good though, I think I have one on my work ute, does boost and EGT.
The only other thing worth monitoring would be oil pressure, but I've never bothered.

Thanks Shack.
When I wrote Engine Gaurd, Its a brand name I think..Just has a quick look.
I've got an "Engine Guard EG01" on one vehicle and an "Engine Watchdog TM4"on another.
Both do 2 inputs and seem pretty reliable.
Cheers

We have just bought a Gauge Innovation block temp and low coolant dash gauge, for the young blokes D1.
Gauge Innovations (https://gaugeinnovations.com/)
We haven't fitted it yet so can't comment on it function.
The low coolant sensor sticks to the plastic coolant bottle and doesn't need any holes in the bottle.
They do a range of 1 , 2 and 3 display units, in 50mm or a flat stick on dash gauge.
The block temp, low coolant and trans temp , or coolant temp, low coolant and trans temp, would be a good combo for an auto.

Thanks Gents,
All these products look good.
I like the one where you can have three parameters in one gauge,
and with a little pic to indicate what your monitoring ie engine or transmission.

I use a SCANGUAGE 2, but can't get exhaust gas temp. Am happy seeing true coolant and auto temps, plus other benefits. Google.

You won't get any report of EGT on a TD5, they don't have a sensor.

Oops, I 'forgot' we are talking about a TD5. You are quite correct, Scanguage not covering that model. [bigwhistle]

I've used the gauge innovations on a 300tdi and it is a really good setup at a reasonable price.
Got a MadMan EMS3 to go in the project but haven't used it yet so can't comment.

I ended up buying an Engine gaurd.
I plan to bolt one sesor to the side of the Auto Transmission to get a measure of transmission temperature, and the other sensor which is a coolant sensor,
I plan to place in a fitting ( yet to acquire) and insert in the top radiator hose.

Thanks Shack,
As I read your suggestion I pictured a metal sleeve wrapped neatly around the transmission cooling line and clamped with a bolt that also holds the temperature sensor.
Good idea.

Hey Tony Have been using the gauge innovations unit for several months and found it very reliable and accurate so far, you only need to look at it with a glance to note engine and trans colour are green and within your nominated temperature range also very easy to fit the sensors. the engine temp sensor uses a bolt on the top coolant hose pipe outlet, and the tranny I fitted the sensor to a spare 10mm bolt on the trans housing. TD5 engine temp been upto 105 and ttrans upto 110 towing a camper up hills and turbo housing has hit 8-900 degrees for short bursts up hill again.
