Gday All,

Looking at a tow tug and the 4.4 tdv8 would have to be the ultimate with the 8sp box..

It seems that in the models that have this combination a lot seem for sale at 200,000km...

My question is..... Is there a major service etc due close to this number ... ie like the D4 where around 165,000km you basically have a body off service where whilst its lifted you may as well do many other preventitive measures making it an expensive service..hence you seem to see alot for sale around the 150k-160k mark

Obviously service history etc is ideal in any 2nd hand purchase but is there anything major around the 200k mark ?

Thanks and cheers Bulletman

Some people just need an excuse to replace their vehicle and 200K is a nice round number.

Be aware of the official lower 250 kg tow-ball weight than most other large Land Rovers in Australia where the UK 250 kg was raised to 350 kg for Australia. The ball is a long way out from the receiver for the Australian van/trailer draw-bar height.

Thanks Graeme , didnt know about the lower tow ball weight.. that may explain why i dont see to many towing towing vans..

Looks like some more research is needed.

It's lovely with my 2.5T van and as I don't want to tow any larger van it's of no concern to me.

You dont see many towing as there werent many L322 4.4TDV8's made.... just 2010-2012.
many more sold in the L494, out of the 6 L494's at Cooma, 5 were SDV8's...

They were made for just on 2 years and effectively with 3 engines. Mine was well over $200K new in 2012 so they weren't for everyone's pockets.

Thanks Graeme and Pedro... can someone tell me if the L494 with the same engine has 250kg or 350kg tow ball weight..

All i seem to be able to find is the braked and unbraked towing weights..

Topix should have the Australian supplement of the owners handbook which should show our towball limit.

Land Rover iGuide Online (https://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/document/LX/2016/900425/proc/G1801060/G1801051)

This shows 350 kg for Australia for the 2016 L494. The web-site doesn't provide for earlier L494s.

NB. LR still doesn't recognise electric trailer brakes in their specs.

Hi What size van you wanting to tow?
my 2011 19 foot dual axel Royal Flair has a listed ball weight of 130 kg, but my scales say 180 kg ..the new to me TDV8 is brilliant to tow it as I did yesterday… 390 kms...but my D2a also tows it albeit a bit slower, but it does well. Re the 200000kms plus ones that are advertised now, as long as you have service records you should be ok….I just did an oil change myself using the suction method…..real easy and no mess…first time with no mess…!!
go and take one for a drive….I bet you buy it!😂😂

I have a 23ft van , the stock standard D3 tdv6 towed it well from Darwin to Perth via the kimberley and many other places. Last time i weighed it loaded tow ball weight way 270kg. I do suspect to be able to get it slightly lower just with the experience of a few trips now and learning what is needed and what is for the just in case.

Im looking at something for extended trips , and have always liked the L322 and after going in Justin Coopers in Tassie a few years back I was pretty well sold

My 2.5T van's ball weight is 290 kg loaded. Moving its spare from under the drawbar to a rack on the rear would probably bring it into spec or at least closer but the van tows so well that I'm not bothered to move it. My only incentive would be that life would be easier for the rear shocks.
