I will be helping my father buy a D3 in the next two months.
I have see it in action on the full speck V8 HSE. So I have no problem with its off road ability's.

I just not to sure which way to guide him as far as petrol or the diesel. We will be looking for a 12 month old D3 or a demo, not new.

It will be for touring and weekend trips with the GCLRO club.

Can anyone help with ideas with the D3, and where would be the best place to pick up a 12 month old D3.

Both engines are great. If it were me & looking to use it for a trip, I'd be looking to see which one gives me the better range. If not... It'd probably be the one that was cheaper to run.

Failing that, go for the TDV6 as the residual values will probably better.

is steveo's still 4 sale Dunno yet, speak to the missus and she will say yes  , speak to me and its a case of we'll see :) , thouhg if got right price would sell it. In terms of diesel over petrol, a petrol is cheaper (2nd hand atm) than a tdv6, so working out if buying cheaper will be cost effective in respect to fuel savings, if that is the issue. Otherwise just taking them both for a drive, I have taken both for a drive and for sure a bit gruntier with the petrol but the tdv6 is no slouch either. And lets face it we dont buy these for on road grunt ( unless you get the v8 :D ), but in all honesty having driven all 3 on road, there isnt much in it.

I like the idea of a V8 but the diesel economy is to good to pass up. Having said that if you save 10k buying the vehicle on the second hand market thats alot of petrol. But you also need to realise that that 10k only has to make up the slightly higher amount required to run the petrol cause the diesel still needs to be filled up.

Some things to take into account.

Cost/100km might be a few dollars higher for the V8 but with a 10k saving this is nothing, then petrol is normally cheaper than diesel at the moment unless you run premium and with the 10k saving you arent paying as much interest on the loan (provided you take out a loan).

After weighing all that up it comes down to personal preference, i personally like diesels cause of the extra range, the D3 tank isnt that big so every extra Km you can get is better and you dont have electrics like the petrol, although this doesnt really matter much with the D3 as most of it is electric anyway. Weeds,
Stevos is a full speck HSE V8 and it would be to expensive.
I think from what ACE has said and a few messages that the Diesel could be the go.
We will test drive both in two weeks decide on the type of engine then.
Would like to keep the price down and get one with little extras just terrain response and 17" tyres.

There wont be two many after market Mods. Just a bull bar front and rear and a UHF radio I would think.

If anyone that has a D3 already I would be interested to see how you have found them to be and if anything what has been fixed under warranty.

Test drove the D3 V6 and TDV6 today and what a 4x4 a big improvment on the D2, even though I love my D2 and will be keeping it for the long haul.
Handles great on road and there is not much differance between the two that Myself or my father could pick.
The V6 has more get up and go for overtaking at 100Km and the TDV6 engine is a little noiser than the V6, but other than that both engines are almost the same.
Of course the TDV6 has more touque low down and would be better if you where towing a caravan or boat a lot and it would be a better purchase if you where doing a lot of touring around the Australian outback for fuel.

But for a daily driver around town and the weekend to head bush I think the petrol V6 is a better buy and I recon we will head that way.

I found this, theres also a few others on this site too.
V6 Petrols are becoming rare also.
The V6 petrol only comes in model now the SE only.
If u want the terrain response then u will need the SE spec or order & wait.
The SE only comes with 18" rims, but some dealers could swap wheels if available.

Cant reveal :o
You will have to ask him if you see him on any future GCLRO trips. But he will only be on easy - medium for a while. I reckon even the Driver Training might give him an extra grey hair. ;)
Even though he introduced me to 4WDriving about 10 - 15 years ago in a Nissan Patrol in the Victorian High Country.

He had me worried 3 days ago he test drove a Ford Territory Turbo. :angrylock:

Hay Jamo,
Its a funny thing driving back to the coast after dad bought the D3 he said I was Determined to get away from a white car this time but it wasn't to be.
He has had a white car his whole live. He has had I think 5 white cars.

He always looks for the best deal and it always seems to be a white car.
