View Full Version : 05 Defender part number help

I am installing a late Discovery 2 CDL transfer into a TD5 Defender. As far as I am aware there are 3 main differences

1 the gear ratios are 1.2 for the Disco and 1.4 for the Defender (will see how this goes as I tow a lot and a higher ratio may suit me, thus avoiding overdrive.

2 there is no speedo drive nor worm gear cut onto the output shaft (I have sorted this)

3 the flanges to the drive shafts are different. Can someone enlighten me on the correct part number for the LT230 output flanges.

I was led to believe the part numbers were LR055718 (front) and LR05519 (rear) which I ordered and received STC4370 (front) and STC3433 (rear), probably alternate part numbers, but neither of which fit on a number of counts. I contacted Land Rover and they gave a part number of IEC100020 for the front (2 - 3 weeks delivery)

We have owned this vehicle since practically new ( since 2006 and 8000kms on the speedo) and never swapped any of these components, so the tail shafts which must mate are original.

The rear flange is the same for defender and discovery 2. STC4370 supersedes to LR055718. STC3433 supersedes to LR055719. You will need to change the high low lever also. The discovery doesn't have bushes where the pin goes though, so it smaller. A late model D2 will also have a different diff lock switch. It's not interchangeable, but just cut the plug and put some spades connectors on it

Thanks for the info on the Hi Low lever, I have new bushes and will drill out to size,

As for the flanges, my Defender is one of the later ones and whether Land Rover were running out of parts and not using standard bits Below are few pics. Both tail shafts have a collar which fits into a recess the LT230 out put flange.
The second pis shows the length difference between a D2 flange and a STC3470, about 7.5mm.
The 3rd pic shows the recess on the STC3470 and the last pic shows the collar on the D2 flange, quite confusing that there are so many variants

STC4370 is the front flange. The d2 flange in the photos is the rear flange, as it has the threaded holes fit the park brake drum.

no no... what you are cocking up is on the rear drive flange you are not accounting for the handbrake drum, once its fitted the rear will be "recessed" and your rear shaft will fit.

Part number are all correct.

Thanks all for your advice, I overthought the situation and overlooked the handbrake drum, as suggested
above. My original part numbers and the flanges I bought were correct.

Well, I’m glad someone else overthinks things at times Erich, I’m very prone to that for one reason or another……. [emoji849]!

But it highlights how good the LR crew and this forum are; plenty of quick, friendly, knowledge based responses shared!
