Gday All,
Going looking at a couple of HSE SDV8s this weekend to be used as tow tug and daily driver... Budget dictates they will have 100k km or above so other than a full service history is there anything else i should be looking for.. ie certain parts like alternator age etc..
The D3 towed our van quite well but its had a heart attack and the thought of a D4 and its known crank issues is giving me a heart attack... D5 well dont know enough about other than its got the same tdv6 engine.. so 4.4V8 seems to have been a good choice for others on the forum..

So what side of the country is McGowanastan?
I Googled it and it came up with this AULRO thread:Rolling:
Anyway, back on topic, isn't there something about timing chains failing and costing a heap to repair on the TDV8,or that could be just the earlier models.
A search may reveal more,a search on Google will probably just lead back here....[bigrolf]

Mcgowanistan is west aust...
Mmm timing chain failure will have to see if i can find that.. not interested in pulling any more engines apart after this tdv6..

I think the timing chain and tensioners are only an issue if the recommended service intervals are exeeded. Don't hold me to that.

IIRC it was during MY14 production that a revised secondary turbo drain was fitted whereas earlier engines needed a modification to their drain. The issue was accumulation of oil in the inlet tract if the secondary turbo wasn't used for some time and as the engines have oodles of torque the secondary turbo can go unused for quite some time, obviously dependent upon how the vehicle is driven.
There aren't any timing chain issues. It's an excellent engine mated very well to the 8-speed gbox. You can't have mine!

Mine either!!:bat:
The only downside in a D3 to RRS swap is the lost storage space..
The HSE's will have brembo's so 20" rims are the smallest in OE

Thanks Pedro
Yeh i thought about the storage space but the van has enough of that so we should be ok...
Will take notice of the wheels as like most LR they seem to be fitted with a more town bias tyre.

Well that was a disappointment...
1 was a V6 , 1 was sold ages ago but the add and a phone call said it was still for sale.. and the last replied it was still for sale but that was as far as we got, when asked when we could come look there was no reply..
I must admit the 2016 SDV6 was a nice drive with plenty of go.

There isnt a lot of difference between the SD's, 700nm to 750nm
I could sway your decision by putting in one simple pic of the two cranks side by side..... [wink11]

Well, before I read of crankshaft failures, Picked up a lathe from Sydney and upon trailer bought it back to the Sunshine Coast
The load was over the max tow weight, but the after market alarms only shrieked twice coming up long pulls, then by pulling over and engine idling for 10 mins I was away again
this is a big long heavy test for any tow
I do change eng.lube oil more often than is necessary
none of the engines I worked on in the 70s had cam chains or belts
all gears
my d4 has 232000km now, it has never been caned through the gears, well at least not by me
I am very limited to what i can do now because i lost the use of my left arm
I have to remove the air comp, but that upper 6mm screw I have no hope of removing
dunno why I am posting here, but I'd go the vee 8 way

Hey Mate,
Don't know how you are progressing with the search but you may not be aware that unlike the D3/4s and potentially older RRS (the model that sat on a D3/4 chassis would have been at a guess), the L494s aren't all set up for towing. Mine only has the wiring.
Cheers,
Kev.

Rear axel weight is a problem if you have a large van. I can't have anything in the rear seat or rear of car , also had to change out the two Lead acid batteries. Land Rover lies about empty weights.

You should have taken a supercharged petrol one for a run [biggrin] The earlier 5.0 supercharged ones had the timing chain issue, fixed with the L494

Land Rover lies about empty weights.1750kg for the rear, SDV8. I would need a ball weight over 400kgs to put it over, that with the back seat empty( well, two dogs and a behind the seat tool box) with spare oil, camping chairs and a ten panel dog enclosure in the boot. Latest ball weight with a 3.1T van is around 280. Rear Toyos at 50lb, they get to nearly 60 after a few hours but Mr Toyo says 50 cold is fine.
